@millihertz iirc it comes from the debian mailing list; they wanted to drop sysvinit because it was ancient, limiting, cumbersome, etc. and the team debated on what to use instead. There was originally a plan to use upstart instead! But after a lot of experimentation, research, and testing, they found systemd to be the better option at the time
