I would always try to see a movie at the Alamo before I would look anywhere else (so would lots of other people—they’d frequently be sold out when other theaters were ghost towns). I have decided to treat them as just another movie theater.

When I transitioned from perma-temp to regular employee at my current job, my position was posted that way.

@NanoRaptor@bitbang.social I seem to recall that Teller (of Penn & Teller) wrote something to the effect that magic really involves doing more setup work and practice than anyone would believe, so that when you pull the trick off, the only possible explanation is “magic.” Now we can attribute it to AI instead of magic.

RE: @MissConstrue@mefi.social

If you like Chrome but don’t like the way Google lards your computer with unwanted files, check out Chromium (https://www.chromium.org/), which is just Chrome without all the Google-specific stuff.

It is updated every few days (no doubt to deal with security exploits). While Chrome will silently install updates (which is convenient but the way it does this is very intrusive), Chromium on the Mac requires you to download a disk image, open it, copy the Chromium file, unmount the disk image, and trash it. That’s kind of a PITA.

Which brings me to my second tip: if you use a Mac, use Homebrew (https://brew.sh). You can kind of think of this as a command-line app store, although it’s for pretty much everything *but* App Store apps. There’s a little bit of rigamarole in the initial setup, but after that, you install an app by typing “brew install appname” into the Terminal (to install Chromium specifically, you’d type “brew install ungoogled-chromium”; you can search the Homebrew website to see what apps it can install), and you can update *all* the apps you installed via Homebrew at once by simply typing “brew upgrade” into the Terminal. Originally Homebrew was intended for command-line software, but it handles many regular desktop apps too.

There is a desktop interface for Homebrew called Cakebrew (https://www.cakebrew.com), but inexplicably, it doesn’t let you search for desktop apps that can be installed using Homebrew.

I have been trying to get a local install of Jekyll to build correctly, and it won’t do so with anything other than the default theme. I’m a total noob at this stuff, but it shouldn’t be that hard. Build doesn't work with remote themes. With locally installed gem themes, I get a complaint on build that the gem is not installed when it clearly is, and the path is in my $PATH.

@mast0d0nphan @dckim @nixCraft I have Ungoogled Chromium installed, and the app file size is 376.9 MB. There’s an Application Support directory (this is on a Mac) that’s 284 MB. So it looks like it is not installing any big AI-related files.

It seems like everything is going on in Austin today. There was a full orchestra tuning up at Central Market this morning. There are neighborhood festivals in Hyde Park and Cherrywood (and probably elsewhere). A friend is having an art opening. Lucky thing we're having nice weather after a rainy spell.

@mrc Take it to a shop and have them check for a bent hanger (or get the tools and do it yourself). Even a slight bend can make a big difference, and it’s easy to fix. Do not take apart a Shimano integrated lever. Each one has about 100 parts (not an exaggeration) and requires special tools to assemble. There are a few people out there who can do it. Sometimes shooting WD40 into the works helps.

@mwichary@mastodon.online Your recent post about focus in Photoshop reminded me of a frustration I have with focus in Mail.

In this screenshot, which message has focus? If I hit cmd-R, which message will I be quoting?

The answer of course is that the upper message has focus, but it should also be obvious that I want to quote the lower message in my response.

I recently switched from Pinboard to Mymarks. Importing my old bookmarks was not quite fire-and-forget. I wound up splitting the bookmark file into twelve files of 100 links, and had one that just wouldn’t import successfully.

It wasn’t clear why. As an exercise, I decided visit every link in that file, which were all about 20 years old, and delete every link that didn’t work. Only 19 of the 100 were still correct, or redirected to something correct. The redirect pictured here…made an impression on me.
