@petergleick This was the flu inaccurately called the Spanish Flu because the Army told the story that GIs had picked it up in Europe, and the press picked it up because of anti-Spanish sentiment . The earliest probable cases were documented in March 1918 in Haskell County, Kansas, United States, near hog and chicken farms.

@beemoh @ianbetteridge Good point about affordability. I am sympathetic but not necessarily in agreement. It's well known that noisy, polluting, and distressing industry gets located nearer poorer neighborhoods that already exist, and that's a problem. But the cases I'm thinking of specifically involve gentrification of warehouse and industrial districts, and the people moving in definitely aren't lower income.

@cadey Isn't the point of the check that the language models don't "get" negation? There have been several good looks at this over the last couple of years at least. https://arxiv.org/abs/2409.00105 and https://arxiv.org/abs/2503.22395v2 or, more casually, https://seantrott.substack.com/p/llms-and-the-not-problem As far I as understand it, the need to have an external determination of negation makes sense. Not like this, though.
