One of my favourite Oak trees, the one in the apothecary garden near the ruined part of the Orval Abbey.

@benroyce@mastodon.social @xinit@mastodon.coffee the Dutch word for reapeopriation "geuzennaam" is a reapropriation. The French rulers called the poor flemish "des geux" and the "Geuzen" became a movement.

@Gaolaitch@cupoftea.social Joy comes my way quite often. During singing, when finishing a drawing or other project, when the swimming lessons went above my expectation, while seeing a rare bird or a beautiful scenery. Quite often in fact. But even on a stressy, doomscrolling, hayfever-heavy-head-and-thick-eyes-day, a silly joke from someone can pierce my shields and make the sun shine.

@aizuchi See how they approach those that serve versus those with power. Are they ableist, racist? Do they behave very differently to women they are attracted to versus those they are not? Do they have a problem with family?
Anything that shows where they are on the "caring about all people versus caring about themselves" scale can give a clue if they could truly care about you, or if they see you as what they need for themselves only.

@mandy@cupoftea.social I love working with people of all ages, doesn’t mean I love all their music 😄
My love of music is so not mainstream anyways, I am glad of some touchpoints.

@Gaolaitch@cupoftea.social in dutch we have a saying:
Wie het kleine niet eert,
is het grote niet weerd.
More or less:
Who doesn’t honor the small,
isn’t worth the big.

@paninid@mastodon.world oldie here, passed the iron curtain to visit family and friends. Dictatorship in different countries comes in different flavours, I learned as an 11 year old. From coping but hard, to all encompassing fear. But always the poverty, the propaganda, the corruption, the arbitrariness, the black market.
One luck back then, gathering intelligence was hard work.

@jwildeboer@social.wildeboer.net also, when you follow more people, there comes a point where everything nice gets 20 reboosts. It is wise to block "boosts only" from the boostiest, so that their own posts and replies don’t drown.

@TarkabarkaHolgy I tend to value manually making things more now, putting ink on paper, sculpting wood, crochet, singing and live music ... enjoying the moment and the making.
I also like musing on what if we lose a whole bunch of technology in the future? Because too enshittyfied, or too expensive, or too dangerous to give one's data to. What skills are worth learning?

@mandy@cupoftea.social Reminds me of my favourite coffee mug, with "Shine on you Crazy Diamond" in gold lettering.
Turned out 80% of my colleagues had no idea. The other 20% went "Are we old, or elite, or are they ignorant in more fields than this one?"

@lerxst @rjblaskiewicz @heidilifeldman So many schoolchildren get a trauma from visiting Bruges. I wish I could say that we improved, that torture doesn't happen anymore.
Loved your alt text, with the word invented by your brother.
Edit: TIL that the correct name of this punishment is flaying, and they didn't stop at one side for Sisamnes.

@dantheclamman@scicomm.xyz @kimlockhartga@beige.party I used to have one and tested it on different tones. I am white but I have a (dark greyish after 25 years) black and white tatoo on my left wrist. When the watch moved around a bit, it would get different readings I feared, but I saw no difference. It gave the same readings as on my white right wrist.

@helenclayton bikes used to have protections on the rear wheel, and the posture used to be more upright, so that skirts flapped down instead of up.

@GoldenRetrieverGF@blahaj.zone @scarlet@plush.city I heard something similar from an American visitor to an IT conference. "I got off the train in Brussels and people were smiling" not the fake friendliness, but no jaws clenched, no fear, going about their business being content.

@RobotDiver@starlite.rodeo I feel you. I like simple puzzle apps for the same purpose, but the one I thought was rather clean on the spying-on-me front turned out to also be hopeless, and I trew all of those apps away.
Trying to find good ones, even when I have to pay for them, is hard. I want: No adds, no wifi, no heating up my phone while just waiting for me to choose a block, doing I don't know what evil or stupid computing/sending/scanning/bitcoin-mining ...
In the meantime I do more "live" stuff 😄

@benroyce @woodenmachines @grammargirl I have always been wondering. When I was a kid we raised turkeys every now and then, and they seemed quite stupid. But people said their wild cousins were way smarter?
Dying from a cold when rained upon, but not understanding shelter or roof. Being ok with tiny chicks that were born before they arrived in the coop, but killing everything new, big or small. And it was quite easy to catch them, unlike our barbary ducks.

@futurebird@sauropods.win other. I think I have a bit of disgraphia. When I write fast my hand seizes up an it becomes a scribling line. The rounded letters aren't round but triangular, and not in the same direction. So for note taking I use capitals.
But the weird thing is, calligraphy does work, i can do school cursive and all the medieval script types and lettering. That feels more like drawing I suppose.

@musiciankate@hcommons.social I sing all kinds of choir music, right now I'm trying to study Monteverdi's Maria Vespres, which has 8 voices and more in places. The differences in human voices helps.
I also found that having the sheet music for the first time, while listening to a well known peace (and being able to read) makes a big difference in what my ears discern.

@keysaunt most primer is acrilyc, that alows for both acrilyc and oil paint. It is good that it is primed already, because otherwise you'd have to look at grafiti sprays for quick drying and good coverage. Not impossible but you'd need a lot of cutouts for this beautiful drawing, and some training.
