Welp, it has been a little over one year since my partner first tried linux after a lifetime of windows use (and once telling me that she would definitely never be a linux person). I'm pleased to say that not only is she still using linux, but she has also developed such things as "distro preferences" and "knowledge of terminal commands". Originally she was going to dual boot, but recently eliminated windows entirely to save drive space for more linux stuff, lol. I'm very proud of her. :'3

So, I've had a t-rex figurine on a shelf above my desk for the last year or so.

Earlier today, with absolutely no warning, it fell down, did a barrel roll, and landed on its feet directly in front of my keyboard, looking right at me.

I applauded.

I feel like this is a sign, but I'm not sure of what.

Growing up poor, black, and southern - the U.S.'s history of violent oppression of my community made me realize, even when I was a small child, that there were multiple different versions of the "United" States. I didn't even get the smokescreen. That's why I ended up being a socialist. I fought for changes, but I now realize this history endangers me here.

I grew up immersed in the cultures around the world, then went to college at a school that had mostly international students. In college, I learned Spanish and French and I prepared to leave. Then, I met the love of my life and plans derailed and I ended up moving to another part of the U.S. since then, this place has been devastating to me, but until now, I did not have a clear stable path to an exit.

I've read folks stories about how paperwork in other countries can be overwhelming, but I've recently gone through several processes over here that involved over a hundred different files, in total. It's overwhelming and the information is often contradictory. I feel like the American reputation for "efficiency" is actually more marketing than anything else - the reality does not match the way this place is advertised.

The part about the people in Germany "having a culture that is calming to how your brain works" reminds me of how I felt when I spent a few weeks in mexico city. I had a lot of peace when I was there (tho it is a very busy place), and I've felt this longing for something that just fit so well since then, to be honest. Folks that have left the U.S., when did you know it was time to leave? Anything you wish you would have known?

How do you feel about it now?

Speaking for where I am now, I know the grass is not greener on the other side, but I also feel like sometimes it is about finding grass that works better for my footwear.

Anyways, I'm thinking about some major life decisions, and I would be thankful for any feedback that might be provided.

Addendum - It's worth noting that racism is also what motivates the destruction of the social safety net in the U.S. It isn't an innocent accident of policy that jobs are tied to health insurance and many other benefits, and black folks are often "first fired, last hired". It isn't an accident that the "welfare queen" stereotype is a black woman, and then white folks vote their own rights away. Racism harms both the oppressed and the oppressor. Real social change must address it.

When you look at the graphs of wealth inequality and resegregation, you'll notice that they started a while ago. These aren't new things here. If you're someone that's white, and you're sitting near someone else and they drop a slur, don't turn the other way. Correct that shit. At a dinner table with your family and someone says something fucking racist as hell? Push back. Cut them off if they don't change their approach. Working a job, and you see a coworker that's a person of color getting crushed? Stick your nose into it. See a movie or game come out with racist themes? Don't fucking buy it or watch it. 16/20

See, I think that things have gotten pretty bad right now, and I'm not sure if anything other than a major structural shift is going to work to undo what's been happening here. My mom was born during the Civil Rights era and had a chance to see a bit of the before and a lot of the after. I guess what I'm saying is that she's seen some fucking shit. There's this idea that Martin Luther King showed up, everyone sat and listened to a speech, then magically things were desegregated. That idea is false. The history of America runs in bands of alternating violence, progress, and badly thought out compromises. It's that last one that I'm most afraid of at this point. 14/20

My mom shouldn't have to live, today, in the same state of fear that characterized her childhood growing up in the Civil Rights era, but I do think that she can see the similarities in this moment of time to so many other dark periods in history. The U.S. doesn't really teach the history of race relations very well, and certainly not how the Civil Rights era actually unfolded. 13/20

This morning when I was talking with my mom and the stories were being shared of what was happening to people in my family that were suddenly getting pushed out of jobs, she said something. She said, "I guess we'll have to go back to how it used to be with white folks. We'll need to do things in secret, stay below them and keep out of sight, and build for ourselves without them. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm not sure that the U.S. is just having a "gilded age". I also think that the U.S. is tearing itself back to an almost antebellum idea of race and racism. You can't divide the "gilded age" from the racial violence that defined the same era, and discussing the one without the other presents an inaccurate picture of what's happening. 10/20

Looking at the full picture of what's happening today, there is something deeper, messier, and uglier than even Trump that's working its way through the U.S. right now. The type of force that can resegregate a society isn't something that can be exerted from the top down. It's something that requires many people laboring in the same direction with the same cultural biases at play. Things are changing out there, and the relation between black and white culture is changing. 9/20

Anyways, he wrote how the nadir of American race relations was reached during that time period between (the failed attempt at) Reconstruction (1870s) and the Gilded/Progressive ages (1890s - early 1900s). During this era, Jim Crow laws were solidified, and obscene levels of violence, death, and hatred towards black people was a defining element of white culture in America. I can't do justice to Dr. Logan's writings on this time period, but I can point you to it. 8/20

I hear people say that this moment in American history hearkens back to the gilded age. I get the general idea. Income inequality is sky high, robber barons are running the government, etc, etc. I don't disagree that this is a good fit, but I do think that it's an incomplete picture of what's happening. Dr. Rayford W. Logan was an African American historian in the late 1800s, and I really urge you to learn about him if you haven't heard of him and you care about history. 7/20

Besides, let's look at it rationally. If unearned jobs were just being farmed out to black people, then shouldn't that have translated into some type of measurable outcome? We have numbers for this. I hear people, even people that are ostensibly liberal, sometimes say shit about how "diversity, equity, and inclusion" was resulting in black people being given jobs we didn't earn. What's funny about that is that I was always far more qualified than white peers, yet less compensated. I wasn't the only one. Everywhere I looked, black people were more qualified, had to work more hours, and yet still got treated far worse than other people that I saw in the same positions. 5/20

For a lot of us, government employment was one of the few ways that we could break into the professional workforce. The reason for this was that public disclosure laws, strict human resources policies, and early civil rights made it possible to get hired in government as a black worker. This means that firing Federal workers isn't just a "cost cutting" measure. It's yet another way to push black people out and return to an earlier era of American life. 4/20

So, I dove down a rabbit hole that led to reading some research papers. What I found is that it isn't just anecdotes. In fact, things are getting worse out here. The cuts that were made to the Federal workforce were extremely damaging to the black community. 3/20

Don't get it confused. What's happening right now isn't a one-off thing. It's literally resegregation, and it's occurring on a massive scale. Lost in everything else that's happening in the US right now, the country is reverting nearly every gain in desegregation that occurred during the civil rights era. I had this thought after talking to my mom and realizing that there aren't any black women in my near family that are employed right now. That doesn't happen in a vacuum. 2/20

It's interesting to me that more and more black femme-presenting people are getting pushed out of their careers and having to make their own way with some kind of self-employment.

At first it's like, yeah, fuck that corporate shit! But, then it's like. Well, wait a minute. This isn't a just empowerment. Yes. It is, on one side, a story of resilience and endurance.

However, on the other side, it's a story of oppressive conditions and the oppressors that have enabled them.

Most folks won't be running a server in their closer, for example. I know I don't. As an example, a self-hosted forum necessarily has other users on it. A self-hosted minecraft server could serve many people. I see supporting self-hosting as a broad anti-centralization front. I'm actually in support of reasonable hosting companies.

Whenever this topic is mentioned, folks seem to think that racism is subtle on the fediverse or that it's rare (or not even present). The reality is that I've seen it be fairly shockingly obvious. I think that some people get it confused. They think that because they don't acknowledge a thing as racism that "racism isn't here". However, the reality of racism is told through the lived stories of those that have faced it here.
