The Journal, The Irish Mirror, The Irish Examiner, The Irish Independent... they *all* illustrate the story about the Met Éireann 'heat warning' with a photo of people having fun on the beach or by the sea front. The Irish Times uses a looping video of people frolicking in the water.

RTÉ uses a photo of someone watering their garden (to reference the government hosepipe ban) so I guess they are *slightly* better today.

'Remain In Light' is probably my favourite album of all time.

I'd always loved it and then I listened to it on a Walkman in the desert during one of the most intense psychedelic experiences of my life. It burrowed deep into my psyche.

What it *means* though is utterly ineffable. And I'm glad David Byrne feels the same way about it :)

Awww. Not Sam Neill. He's been one of my favourite actors ever since I saw Wim Wenders' Until The End of The World back at the start of the 1990s.

I don't think I've ever been disappointed in one of his performances (even if the film itself wasn't great).

And while I never met him, he seemed like a genuinely lovely man, too.

R.I.P Sam.

The International Olympic Committee voted to re-admit Russia. FIFA is considering doing the same with the Russian national team and Russian clubs. UEFA is happy to allow Israel to play in their tournaments and the FAI (Football Association of Ireland) has just voted to go-ahead and play their Nations League matches against Israel.

Is it just me, or is everyone involved in sports governance a moral vacuum in a suit. Not shred of human decency between them.

Two true things:

1. The outrage about the treatment of the flotilla activists by the State of Israel is entirely justified.

2. That there seems to be more outrage about the treatment of the flotilla activists than about the torture and mass murder of Palestinians is reprehensible.

News outlets should mandate stories about "smart glasses" should have the phrase "pervert glasses" in the headline or opening paragraph.

So: "Google to release first pervert glasses since Google Glass flop"

Also, they should illustrate the story with a photo of a geezer in a dirty raincoat.

Today is the 25th anniversary of the release of Brian Eno and J. Peter Schwalm’s album Drawn From Life.

It's not one of Eno's more well-known albums, but I adore it. Released near the end of my heavy psychedelic days, I obsessed about it at the time. Dark room, single candle, loud on headphones, pink microdot; it veers from chill to intense and back again.

Strange nights.

@ciaranmak@mastodon.ie I completely agree. I think social media is a real problem for kids right now, but that's not inherent to social media; it's just what we've allowed it to become. And truthfully, my post was more about highlighting the fact that our politicians and journalists are being driven mad by twitter, and I consider that the bigger societal problem right now. (also LLMs are probably a bigger issue in terms of child protection than social media -- but that's another discussion)

A lot of social media is truly toxic, and if I thought there was a benign way to achieve it, then placing a 16+ restriction on it is something I'd be willing to at least consider.

But I have two problems.

Firstly, I don't believe there *is* a benign way to enforce this that doesn't involve increasingly authoritarian measures.

I've never been into #Eurovision but my wife has loved it her whole life. She skipped it last year and will be doing so again this year.

If she can do it, so can you.

As an Irish football fan, it'll be my turn to make a (tiny) sacrifice later this year.

I don't think just boycotting the Israel game(s) is enough though. If the #FAI insist on playing the matches, I won't be following the entire Nations League campaign.
