Just finished the first book of James S.A. Corey's new trilogy "The Captive's War". "The Mercy of Gods" truly captivated me early on, suddenly switching from following the protagonists normal lives lives with some weird quirks to the main premise about a third in, and making it very hard to put down once it did.
I didn't read anything about the book before I picked it up (blindly trusting I would enjoy the next series by the people who wrote "The Expanse" series), and considering how shocking that main premise turn was, I'm very happy that I didn't.
The book is pretty dark and grim, but the world building is fascinating, and the characters and their struggles within the greater plot, posit interesting ethical questions, and raise interesting questions about how people behave in extreme situations.
I would recommend it, and I'm starting the next book (which is actually an independent novella set in the same universe) immediately.
