Romania rushes to sink 4 barges in the Danube to keep a nuclear power plant’s second reactor running "...BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — Romania raced on Thursday to sink four barges laden with rock into the Danube River in an attempt to redirect water downstream toward a nuclear power plant, to buy more time before its second reactor is likely forced offline due to record-low water levels...." https://apnews.com/article/romania-europe-nuclear-danube-drought-1ddb89604f06026c938363d57da53071 #nuclearpower #climateemergency

SMR status update: same as it ever was. Two repurposed Russian naval reactors on a barge remain the only grid-connected SMRs in the world. They’re 35MW for a total of 70MW. China is still yet to produce a single grid connected SMR, though Linglong One (ACP100) may be soonish. Years after China started the ACP100 program it started working on Hualong One, a new domestic design for a traditional light water reactor. The first connected to the grid in 2021. There are now 10, with dozens more in the pipline. They produce 1.2GW each. https://interestingengineering.com/energy/china-hualong-one-reactor-hainan #nuclearpower

"...Romanian naval forces carried out a controlled explosion to help redirect vital cooling water from the drought-hit Danube to the country’s last working nuclear reactor, while neighbouring Hungary said it may be able to eke out two more days of power from its only atomic plant...." #nuclearpower #drought #climate #climateemergency

French nuclear power plants suspend operations amid heatwave According to Parisien newspaper, french energy company EDF has halted three nuclear reactors and reduced the output of another eight. Environmental regulations require EDF to lower the power of reactors when river temperatures exceed certain levels to protect local ecosystems. After 17 years of construction (the plan was 4.5 years), 2 years of commissioning, and a few months of operation, France's new #nuclear power plant Flamanville 3 is now getting ready for the replacement of its reactor head. It will be out of operation for a year. https://www.sfeninenglish.org/flamanville-3-new-reactor-vessel-head-arrives-ahead-of-vc1/ #Energy #NuclearPower

The Guardian | Spending watchdog warns £38bn cost of Sizewell C nuclear plant is ‘risky’ by Jillian Ambrose Energy correspondent AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information. The National Audit Office warned that the £38 billion Sizewell C nuclear plant in Suffolk may not deliver net savings for UK households until about 2064—roughly halfway through its 60‑year operating life—because the cost of financing its construction under a regulated‑asset‑base model could outweigh the projected £2 billion annual electricity‑system savings. While the reactor, expected to power around six million homes from the late 2030s, promises long‑term low‑carbon electricity, the NAO highlighted immediate and substantial public‑borne risks of cost overruns and delays, noting that comparable nuclear projects have been vulnerable to such problems. Backed by EDF, the UK government and other investors, the scheme has created jobs and sourced about 70 % of construction value from UK suppliers, but critics argue the funding model could leave bill‑payers supporting the plant for years before any power is generated. The NAO called for tighter monitoring, greater parliamentary transparency and value‑for‑money safeguards to mitigate these risks. Decades of photographs showing the state of/decline of the areas around the site of the 1986 Chernobyl disaster. The cleanup after the reactor meltdown & more recent de-commissioning of the other two reactors will continue into the 2060s. Nuclear power is not the final answer to our energy issues... For more evidence, have a look at the Fukushima cleanup, which is expected to take until the 2050s... https://www.nationalgeographic.com/photography/article/chernobyl-nuclear-disaster-forty-anniversary #NuclearPower #Radiation #Chernobyl #Fukushima

PBS NewsHour - The Latest | How next-gen nuclear could help meet energy demands – and the risks involved by Paul Solman, Diane Lincoln Estes The Trump administration has rolled back support for many forms of clean energy. One exception is nuclear power. The president wants to quadruple U.S. nuclear capacity by 2050, and a new generation of advanced reactors in development could signal the dawn of a new nuclear age. Paul Solman reports for our series, Tipping Point.
