I don't know who's following the news, but the Danube and other rivers are at an all time low in Hungary. A whole lot of stuff is coming to light.
So far people have found a Roman gravestone, mammoth bones, an 18th century fortress, several ships and boats, a WWII German motorbike, at least one stolen car, two discarded guns, and a whole lot of wartime explosives and ammo.
What a time to be mudlarking.

A fascinating article about how a group of journalists working for the Hungary state news agency quietly documented all the ways the news was manipulated under the Orbán regime. They have now released a detailed report.
Among many things, this is a terrific example of resistance during the rule of authoritarian regimes. Document, document, document the abuses because one day the sun will shine and the truth can be revealed.

Workers on the construction of Hungary's only nuclear power plant located in the town of Paks on the Danube river, some 120 kilometres south of Budapest. The plant is about to be shut down for the first time its 44 year history due to low river levels, meaning there isn't enough water to cool the reactors.

The Danube is at record lows at the moment. A family member sent us this recent photo taken at about 30 kilometres north of Budapest. Usually the river is close to the embarkment. Amazing - and frightening.

A retro hotel near the shoreline of Lake Balaton in Hungary. The state promoted domestic tourism during the 1960s/1970s, providing subsidised holiday packages to workers. Numerous hotels, such as this one, sprang up all over the scenic Lake Balaton area.
The hotel likely operated into the early 1990s, when luxury hotels and resorts were built. These shabby socialist-era hotels closed down as they struggled to compete with modern resorts.
