I don't know who's following the news, but the Danube and other rivers are at an all time low in Hungary. A whole lot of stuff is coming to light. So far people have found a Roman gravestone, mammoth bones, an 18th century fortress, several ships and boats, a WWII German motorbike, at least one stolen car, two discarded guns, and a whole lot of wartime explosives and ammo. I took a photo of the #danube when flying over the Bulgarian/Romanian border (Ruse/Giurgiu) and man, I’ve never seen it this bad. This is sill end of July, I can’t imagine how much worse it will get through August if we don’t get some proper rain in Europe. This is what #climatechange looks like

The #Danube is experiencing a historic #drought throughout Central Europe. As somebody living walking distance from its banks in #Budapest I went to investigate - and document. This is a story of something both very local and global - effecting millions of people in different ways. On one hand, watersports and fishing have become impossible for locals (and river fauna lost their habitat). On the other hand, several nuclear plants had to be shut down due to insufficient amount of cooling water transported there by this mighty river, and water tables falling drastically along its banks are causing crop failures in an astronomical scale. The Danube is at record lows at the moment. A family member sent us this recent photo taken at about 30 kilometres north of Budapest. Usually the river is close to the embarkment. Amazing - and frightening. #ClimateCrisis #Danube #Hungary

Après l'Autriche et la Slovaquie nous voilà en Hongrie, toujours le long du Danube. Les enfants ont grandi et pédalent bien. Après une étape de 60 km ils ne sont pas vraiment fatigués. Ils montent leur tente et rangent leurs sacoches. Ça soulage aussi les parents. Ce n'est pas la même gestion que quand ils avaient encore des couches. #vélo #voyage #cyclotourisme #Danube

The sad part is the amount of trash on the riverside and in the forest, most visible this time of the year due to lack of foliage and undergrowth. Including this truck tire made in the Soviet Union! It might be over 40 years old, has likely spent the last few decades here. #USSR #pollution #trash #Danube

Danube in winter. Best season to enjoy tranquility. No motorboats, not jet-skis, no cruise ships, almost no people around. I can hear the flapping of the wings of the cormorants on the other side of the river on a wind-free day like this. 💙 🏞️ 🌊 🦆🐟 #Danube #tranquility #winter
