I've mentioned how I'm teaching myself programming as my defiant 40 yo midlife crisis. I think the infatuation a lot of software devs have with llm chatbots has a lot to do with their own inability to use human language, judging by the way they tend to write documentation.

@Beggarmidas@mastodon.social did you see the video? He’s cutting a very shallow curb. It’s not like he knocked over a retention wall and diverted an entire river to his property. Apparently the little curb was enough to handle whatever flash flooding they get and now some of the rainwater that flows along the road gets into his property, that’s all that’s happening.

@dpnash@c.im @glyph@mastodon.social @matt@toot.cafe it’s hard to gauge just by the output because there’s a ton of customizable factors between what you feed the commercial interface, what the LLM actually receives, what it spits out and what gets culled when it’s shown to you. The companies control sampling parameters too, obviously. There’s also that at the end of the day, an LLM is just a very big statistical representation of patterns in human language, and human brains evolved to recognize patterns, you see where I’m going.

@glyph@mastodon.social @matt@toot.cafe I think we already started seeing model collapse since 2024. Up to then, pre-training was the source of improvement. Since then, there’s no more unused, clean dataset because all human generated digital data has been used up, and any improvement comes from post-training, alignment and better bespoke harnesses. The industry hid it well but I think model collapse, at least stagnation, is already here.

Sure this is funny at face value but just under the surface, it reveals how everything relies on captive labor making things work at threat of unemployment.

CEOs and investor class don’t need to know anything as long as they can coerce working class to make things.

It’s also not hard to see why generative AI in particular is attractive to them at a virtually spiritual level. A sycophantic slave that they know isn’t silently judging them back.

Things that are normalized: Extremely rich and powerful people making decisions about poor and powerless ones. Neurotypical “experts” having authority over neurodivergent people. Cis gender medical professionals having authority over trans people’s care. Predominantly male authority figures governing women’s lives… I think I see a pattern here. #ActuallyAutistic Oh oh oh… I recently heard that there was a doctrine in social studies to exclude cult survivors from research about cults because they were deemed “potentially biased”.
