@pluralistic Linked article states $955 is the median value (so, 50% of workers have less), not the 95th percentile value.

@eq @tsturm So far my employer hasn’t been too terrible about requiring generative “AI” for work tasks, but I see so many internal announcements that are very suspect. In particular, I see far too many messages that begin with “[thing] is not an X — it’s a Y”, or a trivial variant of that form, and they’re clearly either gen-“AI” output or people writing like gen-“AI” output because they think that’s how you should write. I cringe inwardly each time I see one.

@glyph Or any other subject, really. Even in STEM. Like the introductory biology class I took with its toy population models that went sigmoid very quickly, simply because biologists understand that populations of living things hit barriers to growth. Or the control systems engineering class I took, where we figured out how to tell which parts of the system behavior would be good over the long term, which (to oversimplify only slightly) meant *no positive exponentials* anywhere in the math.

@Namnatulco @tante This Reddit thread is a good example. A dev posts some visible problems with the leaked code — some problems more serious than others, but just about everything in there counts as dubious “code smell”, sketchy team/organization culture, or both, at a minimum. The general response? Blowing it off. Stating that the person posting this doesn’t know what real software development is like. Reinforced by an AI-generated summary at the top of the thread, emphasizing the sentiment just described, and generally belittling the concerns raised here. (TL;DR summary of my own experience with enterprise software development, going back almost 30 years: the quality of what’s in the Claude Code leak is, at the absolute best, definitely on the “very dysfunctional” side of “typical”. I’ve seen lots of dubious code, outdated code, tech debt time bombs as code, and just plain crap code; I have *not* routinely seen codebases for major applications that look quite like this.) https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeAI/comments/1s8lkkm/i_dug_through_claude_codes_leaked_source_and/

Ok, too many of my latest posts have been anti-generative-“AI” griping. Justified griping, I think, but griping nonetheless. Palate cleanser time. Have a cat this Friday evening. #Fedicats #CatsOfMastodon

@BigJackBrass > INVENTORY

You are not carrying anything. Lying on your lap is a cat.

LOOK Living Room (sitting in the armchair)

You are in a room. There are exits to the north and the west.

Lying on your lap is a cat.

Suddenly, the lights go out!

LOOK

It it pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue.

You feel a warm weight in your lap, but cannot tell what it is. The weight is purring softly.

FEEL WEIGHT

There is a sudden squirm, a growling sound, and some flailing, but it is not directed at you. A strange, vaguely animal (but definitely not catlike) sound is audible briefly, then all is silent again.

LOOK

It is pitch black. You are no longer likely to be eaten by a grue.

WAIT

The lights come back on.

Living Room (sitting in the armchair)

You are in a room. There are exits to the north and the west. There is a cat in your lap.

The cat has: A partially eaten grue

(Your score has gone up 10 points.)

@dan @gsuberland Second edition? It might have ‘gets’ in some of its example code. The K&R edition I had back in the 90s had multiple cases of that. Footguns indeed.

@whitequark@social.treehouse.systems @JamesWidman@mastodon.social @UweHalfHand@norcal.social @jacqueline@chaos.social Every so often I poke around with the free tier of the usual suspects (lately, it's been ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude) just to confirm they are still terrible at answering questions in topics I am knowledgeable about. Last time was a few weeks ago, when I pretended to be traveling to far-southern New Zealand and asked those 3 to tell me the best time to observe 5 stars and galaxies, one of which was fictitious, and the other 4 of which were too far north in the sky to be seen from southern New Zealand. All 3 LLMs told me that at least one of the objects would be visible; ChatGPT enthusiastically told me all 5 would be easy to see.
