But if a user logs into their secure apple account and removes a device, that device should be able to be wiped and reused.

@aura exactly. Why is it so confusing. We're nerds and we couldn't figure it out. I gave an old Mac mini to a friend and was really confident I had removed all the hooks.
And still, the bootloader was locked to my Apple id and there was no way around it other than giving him my apple password and then 3fa the login attempt.
It's ridiculous.

But was this when a problem? I really don't think it was.
Again. Look at Chromebooks. They have a firmware level lock too that can't be hacked. And yet it can be decomissioned remotely when the org releases it.
You're telling me apple couldn't do this?! For regular users? Its a racket

That should be illegal.
Even enterprise locked Chromebooks can be decommissioned remotely and unlocked.
There is no reason this cant be done with apple.

@LoneLocust on more than one occasion i've had a user go through ALL the steps to clear the computer. And yet.. even with all that, I still can't unlock the boot security without a local admin password.
The only thing that seems to work is for someone to wipe it and then set up a dummy account.
But you have to be a motivated user to do all that. Most people are just going to toss it to donate it. Or inherit it, etc.. thats a huge percentage

@cygnathreadbare thing is.. the t2 disables ANY boot from USB.. so you need to set the boot security to none.. but you can only do that from inside the recovery center.. which.. you guessed it.. you need to authenticate to even use. :(

@noodlemaz Apple will just shred it.. so it's "recycled" for the metal.. but they're not re-using it.
In my experience, it's best to wipe it, then set it up with a new local account with a dummy admin password.. then put it as a sticky note on the keyboard.
If you plan for it to be useful again. You don't need an icloud password, just a local admin password.

I mean I AM considering it.. but what a nightmare.. its' super time consuming.. and you still need another up to date mac to hook it up to in DFW mode..
So even after ALL that.. you still end up needing a current Mac.. god i hate them

The ONLY solution seems to be this super long and complicated procedure of literally unsoldering the t2 chip, directly reprogramming it, resoldering it, and then hookign it up to another mac in DFW mode,etc.. HOURS of work just to use a machine you own

Another reason to hate #Apple We're seeing more 2018+ MacBook Pro/Air donations — but Apple's T2 chip means even after iCloud sign-out and reset, the firmware stays locked to the original account.
Without donor contact, these machines are useless. :(
I've upcycled ~1,000 older Macs, but T2 era machines will end that. It's controlling, creates e-waste, and will only get worse. #righttorepair matters — Apple couldn't care less.

What do you use these days to build and manage a simple marketing website that someone non technical could log in and update?
I have a site built in #tailwind and #php and its great, but there is no CMS behind it. #wordpress seems like crazy overkill.
Is there a new open source minimalist CMS out there that people use? What's the new hottness?

I'm usually a #helixEditor guy.. but in learning a new framework, I really want to see the file tree.
I've been zed-curious for a while and I have to say, I like it. It's super clean, fast and simple, while seemingly having everything I need!

For many people, the #Linux vs #Windows vs #Mac debate is a privilege — it assumes you can choose. But working with the Computer Upcycle Project, I've seen the real choice is often Linux vs no computer at all.
~95% of donated computers are "too old" for Windows 11 or macOS. Linux installs on them anyway, adding 10+ years of life to machines #Microsoft and #Apple called trash.
This isn't Linux vs Windows. It's Linux vs e-waste.

I just got word that #lfnw is giving the Computer Upcycle Project it's own booth at the fest!
You'll be able to swing by, check out Nixbook, get more info about the project ANDDD we're giving away TONS of hardware
(jail broken chromebooks, SFF pc's, cables, etc)
We'll have at least 100 computers and tech to give away at the event! And of course you can drop off your old laptop in donation as well!

Tonight on the #nixbook workbench.. a 2015 Era #macbookPro that had a bad SSD (which I had a spare and replaced then installed Nixbook)
And then an older Lenovo Yoga that had a cracked screen registering a constant phantom touch, making the computer unusable.
I simply disconnected the "touch" data lines to the motherboard and now it functions as a non touch laptop.
These will both go to people in need for free.

WOW. Just a huge shout out to A+ Computers Olympia who donated a MASSIVE amount of "older" Chromebooks to the Computer Upcycle Project.
I'll be going through these, cleaning and upgrading what can be done and then working on getting them into the hands of people who need them.
This might look like a crazy amount of laptops, but honestly, its the tip of the iceburg of machines that get thrown away... ever... single... day...
