@greem Thank you for sharing. If you're under 50 and have risk factors, don't wait. Ask for the tests now. With it on both sides of my family it was a very short discussion with my GP, thankfully all clear for now. A friend didn't find out till he was 50 and has already been through two sets of treatment. Early detection and treatment is key.

@greem this is a very important post, thanks for sharing. :blobcat_hearthug: I'd like to add something: since I've just turned 35, my PrEP doctor told me I should start thinking about doing a first prostate check in the next 5 years, because of the hormonal changes that cause the increasing of chances of prostate enlargement, so if something is out of the ordinary, it can be investigated early.

@greem Thank you for posting this ... especially without the CW! I'm pleased you are relieved by your current state of affairs. My hormone treatment is now "running down" with post radiotherapy psa undetectable. I was lucky ... over 70 y.o. and fully contained growth.

@greem And if people are particularly afraid or embarrassed about getting a finger up the bum, they can try having routine checkups *before* turning 50. Those are blood exams, I had mine this year, and they also measure "the probability of prostate cancer"* to try and detect it early. *my words, not theirs. Not a doctor.

@greem thanks for posting this. I had a slightly elevated PSA and MRI and sampling showed early stage cancer. Treatment "Active surveillance ". Rather than wait for the cancer to grow and spread and require radiation or chemotherapy I was fortunate to be able to have it removed. Now 9 months cancer free and urologist "ecstatic ".

@greem I am saddened to hear of your diagnosis and heartened by your willingness to help others. One of the things that my V.A. healthcare* does well is extensive blood testing and report transparency at each regular exam. So I get to see my PSA every year. Also had a DRE there. So far so good. * roughly analogous to NHS but for US military veterans

@greem My father's Prostate cancer has kept me on alert basically since I turned 18, and these days the removal of my prostate is about as inevitable as the removal of my gonads because the endometriosis is causing it to swell up large enough to block my colon. Get you a girl with a PSA that fluxes up and down on a sin wave (also my liver enzymes and sex hormones do this, ovotestis is no joke)

@greem Interpretation of the PSA is done in two ways: its absolute value and its changes over time. In other words, if you had a routine PSA screening test at, say, age 50 then you have a value against which subsequent tests/values can be compared. So get the routine test done early in life and keep its result stored somewhere safe. If the subsequent test at, say, age 70 shows that the PSA has increased significantly then you know a lot more than if you had only the value at age 70.

@greem I am lucky - my family doctor has had me do PSA and DRE since I was 50. When the PSA numbers reached 5 they referred me to a urologist. After 3 years of active monitoring, an MRI and biopsy showed a tumor that resulted in my decision to have the prostate removed. Surgery was 2 years ago and so far all is well.

@greem My doctor probably saved my life by asking me to get my prostate checked when my PSAs started to waver, going a bit higher than normal. It doesn't take much, guys, and the earlier you find out, the better the prognosis. It turned out to be early-early-stage cancer, and with a bit of surgery, it's been "cured" for now. If I had waited, or ignored it, who knows where I'd be now. My urologist told me that _every male_ is going to get prostate cancer eventually, it's just a matter of what age, and if you die of something else first. If you aren't having PSAs tested regularly, or with your regular checkups, ask your doctor to start. Also, both my GP and my Urologist said that you really should start getting checked around 40, rather than 50. You can put it off, but the earlier you start checking it, the safer you will be.

@greem masc-aligned in general are more likely to wait til its almost too late to see doctors. like all the male breast cancer stories are like "i went in when my nipples started to bleed and thats stage 4" i think the pressure to remain cool headed and strong meets the anxiety of perhaps having a dr confirm something you dont want to be true and it becomes deadly. good luck bud. i really hope you claw back more time from this thing.

@greem as a 2x cancer survivor I say #fuckCancer! Congrats on kicking its ass so far, keep up the good fight! And as a fellow AMAB who just hit 50 this year, I’d tell all y’all: don’t fear this checkup… the DRE is, in the words of my doctor, “a relic of the past”. Modern blood tests are far more accurate. If the blood test gives reason to worry they’ll schedule a detailed exam. And you should be getting a colonoscopy anyway! Which will apparently spot enlargement just as well.
