We have arrived at #DWCon26, where I've seen two people walking around without ducks on their heads.

The other night in #TheChat, I was reminded that, for many years I thought that Twoflower the Agatean tourist in the Discworld books literally had four eyes, because he was described as having four eyes. I have been a spectacles-wearer since I was 7, yet somehow I didn't clock that it was a reference to him wearing glasses. I am not a smart man. HOWEVER, I was vindicated when someone noted that apparently Josh Kirby, the cover artist for the early books didn't clock it either, accord...

Having never been to a Discworld Con before, I'm reading through the traditions page on the website to familiarise myself with some of what to expect. This entry is lovely: Silas T Firefly Sir Terry Pratchett was always happy to engage with his fans and attended the DWCons when he could, usually as Guest of Honour. Before becoming a famous author, Terry was a fan himself and understood how Conventions worked from both perspectives. This led to him fostering a good relationship with his f...

We're off to Discworld Con this weekend, so the theme for this week's edition of #ThePlaylist is: The Discworld Songs about wizards, and flying turtles, and DEATH, and THE DEATH OF RATS, will abound. Or just songs about discs, or worlds. Are there any flat Earth bangers? #TheArchive - https://djdarren.site/archive/podcast/theplaylist-116-the-discworld/ Listen! Enjoy! In case you've not yet seen it, here's the trailer for Wicker, in which Olivia Colman gets it on with a wicker man. I very much wish to see this film. https://youtu.be/UVAki9SGrlg

Quite often I lament that, despite putting out tunes as monumentally exhilarating as Die, Alright!, somehow The Hives didn't end up running the world. https://youtu.be/QI8NccqlygQ

If you get paid on the last Friday of the month, then congratulations on surviving another five week month. Treat yourself by paying your bills and buying the basics that you've been running very, very low on.

A discussion on here this morning has reminded me once again of one of the finest 2 1/2 minutes of TV ever broadcast. https://youtu.be/oXh4T-ShaL0

It's a bird! It's a plane! No! It's #ThePlaylist This week we have another guest theme, this time from @FloatingOnion who flew in (without a cape) to ask for songs about: Heroes He wanted to hear YOUR most heroic tunes. He wanted to hear songs that'll save people from a hijacked passenger jet, or have the ability to leave the last chocolate Hob Nob in the packet. He wanted songs that were strong, and fast, and fresh from the fight, and by golly, he got 'em. #TheArchive -...

One of the things I enjoy about being married to @Troggie@beige.party is seeing an entry on our shared calendar for "There will come soft rains" on the 4th of August, because that's the day the Ray Bradbury short is set.

LB: I have an LG TV, and have gotten into the practice of yelling "GO FUCK YOURSELVES LG" repeatedly while watching it. I won't lie, it severely diminishes my enjoyment of almost all TV shows, but there's a principle at stake, and I am a man of principles. @jalefkowit@hachyderm.io https://hachyderm.io/@jalefkowit/116944093949808161

Dreamed last night that @daveybot@mastodon.scot and @TheBreadmonkey@beige.party had a restaurant called Davey & Benny's, and they treated all of #ThePlaylist listeners to a big, free meal. So, er, lads: can you make the dream a reality? Cheers.

I recently discovered Worse on Purpose, and love it for deep dives like this one. https://www.worseonpurpose.com/p/your-cookware-got-worse-on-purpose Granted, the majority of the brands mentioned in this article are American, but European brands aren't immune to the same kind of fuckery.

Join #ThePlaylist once again, where this week the Mainframe has chosen the theme of: Electric Dreams And we're too scared of the Mainframe to go against its wishes. So two hours of whatever the phrase "electric dreams" conjured up in the silicon minds of the LLMs that sent in their suggestions for thematically appropriate songs that humans 'enjoy'. #TheArchive - https://djdarren.site/archive/podcast/theplaylist-114-electric-dreams/ Listen! Alas, I fear my adventures in Work Linux are about to come to a grinding halt. The IT guys finally rolled out MS365 yesterday, and I need admin permission to add the Linux OneDrive plugin, which they probably won't grant because they don't know anything about Linux and think it's all a bit weird.

Join #ThePlaylist on a grand tour as this week's theme takes us to: South (of the United States of) America where all of the tunes are, in some ways moreso than others, related to the lands to be found South (of the United States of) America. And not South Africa. Definitely not. It's a whole different place. #TheArchive - https://djdarren.site/archive/podcast/theplaylist-113-south-of-the-united-states-of-america/ Listen! Enjoy! Tonight we're watching The Sheep Detectives, which, enjoyable though it is, is one of those Anglo-American productions where it's set in England, it looks like England, but there's a bunch of stuff that's American. Like the rival shepherd driving about in a '60s American pick up truck, the postie wearing a blue uniform that says 'Postal Service', the butcher having a garish neon sign. I don't know why productions do this. Surely it makes everyone slightly uneasy...

Anyway, yesterday I took delivery of a 2013 27" iMac in damn near mint condition for only the cost of postage, and I think it's fucking outrageous that I have to be at work instead of at home putting A Linux on it and faffing about with it. Its inclusion in my studio means I have to re-jig everything, because a 27" iMac next to my 28" display is A Lot Of Screen. In fact, Too Much Screen for how I currently have it set up. But it'll be GLORIOUS once everything is in place.

Holy shit! The literal video version of Total Eclipse of the Heart is on YouTube again. I remember looking for a few times, but I guess it kept falling foul of copyright strikes. Anyway, in honour of the memory of the great Bonnie Tyler, enjoy one of the finest things YouTube has ever hosted. https://youtu.be/fsgWUq0fdKk
