@allanfriedman after hearing various stories of how shingles is, along with some early evidence that it helps against dementia, got mine in Dec/Apr. really no worse than the COVID vaccine in recovery. i'm still waiting for the improved 5G performance, though. :)

@allanfriedman I got the vax several years ago. I had had pain on my face and scalp for decades that they said was rosacea. Totally stopped. Cold sores that were assumed to be herpes also stopped (very closely related viruses). It can cause many problems beside full-blown shingles outbreaks. And having also had that before, take my word...you don't want no part of this shit, Dewey Cox. Amazing vaccine.

@allanfriedman I learned that Chicago will give citizens (over 50) without health insurance a free shingles vaccine as well.. so if ppl need one but are uninsured, check your city's health department

@allanfriedman FYI if you’re like me and have already had shingles: it’s recommended to get this vaccine to reduce the chance of reoccurrence 👍 https://www.health.harvard.edu/diseases-and-conditions/vaccination-still-recommended-after-a-shingles-infection

@allanfriedman I’m sorry to hear you have long term side effects. The only thing that has ever happened to me that was more painful than shingles was a kidney stone. +1 to getting the vaccination as soon as you are eligible, and even if you have had an active infection in the past.

@allanfriedman I would get that TODAY if the doctors would let me. That is happening the DAY I turn 50, I assure you.

@allanfriedman if you are immune compromised, you can get the shingles vaccines at 19 y/o. Here’s the CDC’s full recommendation: -CDC recommends 2 doses of recombinant zoster vaccine (RZV) to prevent shingles and related complications in adults aged ≥50 years. -CDC also recommends 2 doses of RZV for adults aged ≥19 years who are or will be immunodeficient or immunosuppressed. Shingrex is the brand name for the current best version.

@allanfriedman yes please. I'm nearly there but not quite. You've made me realize there is one benefit to getting old. Now please fix my knees.

@allanfriedman @andybrwn I’ll chime in here to say that the same virus also causes Ramsay Hunt Syndrome, which paralyzes half of your face for some period of time. I woke up one morning and thought I’d had a stroke. Imagine half of your face not working at all for seven months. That was me. So yeah people, get the vaccine. I got it later and I’m happy for it.

@allanfriedman Friend had Shingles in an eye. He’s lucky to still see out of it.

@allanfriedman What a time to see this toot. I’ve been considering this. I have MS and am immunocompromised. I’ve had shingles a few times but luckily not bad. I’ve been reading a lot about the vax and its efficacy for other things, ie. Dementia and possibly stroke. I’ll be 62 next week but vax expensive here. I’m considering spending my birthday money on it. My birthday treat. 🤣

@allanfriedman Thank you for your reminder about shingles vaccinations. To my fellow Australian friends the vaccination is free at 65 and I think sooner for certain risk groups. Also importantly it's available at pharmacies for free. No appointment needed at my local which is really convenient. Neither of my 2 shots resulted in symptoms beyond a slightly sore arm, fyi sometimes I get mild fever with other vaccinations

@allanfriedman getting shingles is *bad* folks. miss wizard contracted the virus about 20 years ago, was in excruciating pain for months, and, to this day, will not let me touch her in the area of the outbreak due to lingering discomfort. this virus stole a part of my partner from me. #get #vaccinated #dummy

@FaithinBones@mastodon.social 2026-05-07 12:21
@allanfriedman the sad part is too many parents aren't vaccinating their kids and they could doom them to shingles in the future

@ferricoxide@blahaj.zone 2026-05-07 13:21
@allanfriedman@infosec.exchange I had several relatives get shingles when I was younger. So, when I started getting towards vaccination-age (especially given my immune-compromised state), I started pestering my GP at each annual physical, "is this the year I should get vaccinated for shingles?" I really don't want the kind of misery I saw as a teen.

@allanfriedman What is the recent news?
-
@MCDuncanLab@mstdn.social 2026-05-07 16:32
@allanfriedman Gah-so sorry to hear that! I'm grateful for people continually posting about shingles. I did get mine because I kept hearing horror stories of not getting it.
