"The Mastodon time line is empty and boring" Listen, I posted the picture of a couple of poorly panted Warhammer miniatures, got a few likes, looked at who liked it and followed those who seemed to boost a lot, and now I am awash of photos of gorgeously painted miniatures! Your timeline is as alive (or dead) as you make it!

@j_bertolotti I don't know what some people expect from 'social media'. Maybe some really need 'huge amounts of followers' and that's their goal. What I like about Mastodon is to me it feels like "going into a room of friendly people with interesting things to say / know you can chat with". A bit like going to some retro-computing meeting where you know that everyone there is overall to see something and have a good time meeting people 🙂 My timeline is sufficiently full for me 🙂

@j_bertolotti GASP You mean... no algorithm pushed benshapiro catturd2 newsmax accounts for you to follow, by default??? And... you get to choose what you see on your timeline?!?! NO WAY. Did those guys know about that amazing feature of a timeline free of #DTBO pushed stuff??

  • @j_bertolotti the lack of discovery at least used to be a problem; when I first joined Mastodon I didn’t know of any accounts to follow, so my feed stayed empty until accounts I followed on Twitter started migrating. Once I was following enough accounts to find more through their boosts and such, curating it was easy. If getting started is still a problem today, well I guess that’s why they’re working on features like “starter packs”

@j_bertolotti I've had to break my timeline up into three ranked ones (Home and two lists that exclude their members from Home) because otherwise my Home timeline is too much of a firehose.

@j_bertolotti when I hear "The Mastodon time line is empty and boring" I am confused because isn't that a feature rather than a bug? Like, the biggest problem with Big Social is that it shoves an algorithmically generated firehose of crap in your face that you have to sort through and Fedi is a blank canvas ready for you to craft your own newsfeed masterpiece!
