@MCDuncanLab periodic reminder: when entering details of a fake person (using your own name and date birth lol) into a system in the test environment (it wasn’t, it was live) think about the consequences first. He didn’t think and he did use his own details. No, not me. Really. And he was very nervous for the next several months it took to go through the really not straightforward process to remove his detail from said production database. How we laughed. How we were so glad it wasn’t us. Yes, really very glad. Listen up, kids 🤪 never enter your own name and date of birth into a computer system. Ever. Unless it’s for real. And even then, ask yourself if they really need your real date of birth. Or middle name. And so on…

@MCDuncanLab Allround PLSQL developer supports colors per database connection. I set it to blue, green, yellow and red (well, pink) for dev, testing, acceptance and production environments, and it has been a life saver 😅

@MCDuncanLab@mstdn.social Color-keying input interfaces is always a good idea, no matter the context. EARLY in my SA career, I rebooted a production database server because I thought I was logged in to the dev or T&I one (they all had the same hostname, just different subdomains and only the hostname showed up in the shell-prompt). Since that incident, I've always used different color windows for different environments. No "did the right thing in the wrong place" incidents since.

@MCDuncanLab I use version control (git), even for documents that are never uploaded anywhere else (I use it to track my edits while writing a paper, for example). A side-effect is that I'm (relatively) ruthless in deleting text --- I can always recover it with git after all :) I had like 4 versions of my CV a while back and consolidated it into 1 version tracked by git.
