  I sympathize with all the Android users who are upset about Google locking Android down further, but FTR I find the “Keep Android Open” phrase inaccurate at best. Android is already not open, there’s ~20 years of Google ruining Android already. While yes, keeping Google from exerting more control is desirable, it will never supplant the need for real open operation systems and software for our mobile devices. The vendor duopoly is the problem, no matter who those vendors are.

  IMO one of the core functional issues (There are plenty of non-functional ones too, of course) with people who use LLMs for writing code is: It strips away friction. You can’t first “make the change easy”, if you never realize the change was hard to begin with, because you never felt the friction of trying to make the change yourself. LLMs rob us of one of *the* core signals to whether our code is working with us, or against us.

  Over the past couple of nights I've been setting up my Mastodon server on a new Ubuntu 26.04 VM (The original server was set up using Digital Ocean's "One click install" on 20.04 back in 2022). I feel like a teenager again, in a good way. I haven't had this much fun messing with computers in a long time.

  All of the "But how are they going to enforce it!" people seem to have missed the part of human history where it was largely decided how to enforce rules that are difficult to enforce is called a legal system. Is it perfect? No. But like... that's the answer? That is literally how we enforce anything in the real world?

The school I went to as a kid doesn’t even exist anymore. It was an empty field last time I visited a few years back.

  I don't know who needs to hear this, but the very idea of Open Source was always a radical left leaning ideological stance. You're GIVING AWAY labor to the tune of millions of dollars because of some notion that we'd all be better off together if we didn't have to re-write the same dang components over and over again. Of course members of the Open Source community are going to get political. We always have been.

  #LazyWeb I'm in possession of a couple of old #books that are immensely valuable to me (Though not in any objective way), problem is their binding is starting to fall apart. I assume someone on this planet makes a profession out of fixing such things, but I have no clue where to find these people. Does anyone have any leads? Somewhere near the #PDX area is of course preferable, but not mandatory.

  Of all the crazy things in the world, I love that American Airlines’ carry-on policy now includes a section on converting amp hours to watt hours AND it’s wrong. https://www.aa.com/i18n/travel-info/baggage/restricted-items.jsp This math only holds true assuming you’re drawing 3.7 V, which is a bit of an odd assumption.

  My family is going to San Francisco later this summer. I *want* to take the Coast Starlight. But even in coach, that’s $660. The cost of driving it would be $115 at $4.5/gallon. This is not how you make public transit win.
