It would be interesting to see how people who are nomadic (van life type folks) do homelab/selfhosting. That has to put a fascinating wrinkle in it. Still in Mid Wales, we elected to return a couple of places we’d enjoyed on previous travels in Wales. The first is the RSPB Gwenffrwd-Dinas Nature Reserve ~6km from Cilycwm, where a 3km circular trail runs riverside (📷1) & through an ordinarily damp alder & oak woodland (📷2), where lichens, mosses and liverworts collectively create a "Celtic rainforest" (a.k.a. Atlantic temperate rainforest). Although they hid from us, birds find sanctuary here too & on a previous visit in May we witnessed a remarkable carpet of bluebells. Twm Siôn Cati's cave is linked to the legend of a 16th C. Welsh outlaw. Through participating in an RSPB survey we gained insights into the interplay between #rewilding & active management. We then returned to Cardigan Bay at Mwnt, via a senic but mostly single-lane route. Mwnt Beach is lovely (📷3) & the adjacent headland offers views up & down (📷4) the coast; the landscape forms part of the Wales Coast Path & we watched bottlenose dolphin frolic offshore. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 #uk #wales 🚀 #travel 🚐 #camperVan #nomad #roadTrip #vanLife 🥾 #nature

Before leaving North Wales & Parc Cenedlaethol Eryri | Eryri National Park we stopped for lunch at Harlech. The beach here on Cardigan Bay boasts several kilometres of sand that are notably wide at low tide (📷1) & are backed by dunes that constitute an important conservation area (📷2). We found the beach awash with Chrysaora hysoscella | the aptly-named compass jellyfish, apparently common in coastal coastal Atlantic & Mediterranean waters—although it hadn’t registered with us previously (📷3). Just inland from the beach is Castell Harlech | Harlech Castle, part of the UNESCO listing “Castles and Town Walls of King Edward in Gwynedd” (📷4). Like those at Conwy, Caernarfon & Beaumaris, the castle at Harlech was built for Edward I to conquer & hold Wales for the English Crown during the late 13th/ early 14th centuries—a feat he was unable to replicate in Scotland. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 #uk #wales 🚀 #travel 🚐 #camperVan #nomad #roadTrip #vanLife 🥾 #nationalPark 🌍 #unesco

[2/2] After ~6km/ 2h on trail we reached Keld, the highest village in Swaledale. After 🍦 we began climbing Kisdon via Corpse Road when we spotted our flora small of the day: native flowering succulent Sedum acre | the goldmoss stonecrop (📷1). Elevated views from near the Kisdon summit offered a sense of landscape scale (📷2) & served as a stage for the ground-based & aerial antics of avian fauna of the day, Vanellus vanellus | the northern lapwing (📷3). For all those people who knew, interacted with and followed @Cbfoley@mastodon.ie and her van adventures in the Republic of Ireland, I have some very sad news to share. Although she has not been online for quite a while I kept in contact with her through email and I knew she was very ill. Her husband contacted me today, and later sent me her death notice. Obligatory not an engineer. As part of my vanlife prep, I've built a calculator to handle the deflection calculations on long metal posts (because I want a hammock instead of a bed and I need to build a custom stand to fit my layout--let me know if you need/want more details). I was originally looking at 40x40mm extruded aluminum for weight and deflection values I'm getting out of my calculator, but I just ran some numbers on unistrut and... Can someone double-check what I'm seeing here? I'm looking at an ~86-inch length of metal, with a point load of 400 lbs and clamped support (which I believe is the best "simple" calculation for my intention). For 8020.net's 4040 (40mm) extruded aluminum, I'm getting 10.174mm of deflection. For UnistrutOhio.com's P1000 (1-5/8" or 41.3mm), I'm getting 0.063mm of deflection. Is that realistic or have I messed up my calculations somewhere? #AskFedi #AskEngineers #vanlife

Wczoraj zajechaliśmy do Modica po czekoladę do Bonajuto. Bezapelacyjnie jest to póki co najlepsza czekolada "gorzka" jaką jedliśmy (z mlecznych mamy faworyta z Belgii). Po ostatniej wizycie zapasy "na rozdanie znajomym" niestety nie przetrwały. Kupiliśmy 70% które najbardziej nam smakowały, potem na spróbowanie kilka smakowych - z cynamonem, wanilią, z oślim mlekiem i z biały pieprzem. Z ciekawostek - w prowincji Ragusa żyją jeżozwierze. Żona myślała, że zobaczyła nocą przerośniętego jeża, albo bobra, ale jeże nie wyglądają na 20kg, a żadnych stałych rzek czy zbiorników wodnych w okolicy niema więc bóbr odpadał. Potem przy drodze widzieliśmy rozjechanego i sprawdziliśmy, że serio tu występują. Dziś jesteśmy w Katanii i planujemy sobie iść na plażę i do centrum. Noc spędzaliśmy przy Ikei - mają kilka miejsc "dla kamperów" i po sezonie nikt nie robi problemów. Daleko od miasta, ale przynajmniej spokojnie, a w dzień i tak jedziemy w okolice miejskiej plaży. Chyba nareszcie przyszła wiosna - jak daleko pogoda pokazuje, ma być 0 deszczu, słońce i idealne 18 stopni. #microblog #vanlife #sycylia

In diesem Vlog erkunden wir zunächst Tallinn, vom kreativen Viertel mit dem Fotografiska Museum zum leckeren Mittagessen in der Altstadt, bevor wir die Hauptstadt verlassen und mit der Fähre auf Estlands Inseln übersetzen. Der morgendliche Blick aus dem Camper. Kurz vor der Grenze zu #Polen. Wir haben beschlossen dass es genug Winter für uns war und starten langsam unseren #Speedrun gen Süden. Heute zwar nur ein kurzes Stück und am Samstag dann nochmal 2-3 Nächte Zwischenstopp in #Warschau, danach dann größere Etappen. Den Rest des #Baltikums schauen wir uns dann mal zu einer anderen Jahreszeit an. #vanlife #overlanding
