The Washington Post reported this week, citing two people familiar with the inquiry, that federal and state health officials are examining a possible link between Taco Bell lettuce and the outbreak, though no agency has publicly confirmed a single source. Yum Brands, which owns Taco Bell, said Tuesday that some restaurants had voluntarily and temporarily pulled a handful of fresh ingredients as a precaution. The company was careful to note that health officials have not tied the illnesses to its restaurants, its supply chain, or any specific product. The statement came as case counts kept climbing in Michigan, the outbreak’s epicenter, and as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued an alert urging doctors nationwide to watch for the infection. What the Taco Bell cyclospora outbreak investigation has confirmed so far The CDC said this week that 1,645 laboratory-confirmed domestic cases of cyclosporiasis have been reported across 34 states since May 1, with roughly 5,100 additional illnesses reported to state and local health departments still under review. Combined, officials say close to 7,000 cases are confirmed or being investigated, making this one of the largest cyclosporiasis outbreaks recorded in the United States in years. Michigan has been hit hardest. The state’s Department of Health and Human Services reported 3,309 cases as of July 14, most of them concentrated in southeastern Michigan, including Wayne County, where Detroit is located. At least 44 hospitalizations had been reported in Michigan alone as of earlier this week. Federal officials said Tuesday that they believe cases in four Midwestern states, Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia, are connected, based on more than 400 illnesses reviewed so far. New York and Ohio have each reported several hundred cases of their own. Michigan health officials say lettuce and other salad greens remain the leading suspects, but they have stopped short of identifying a specific grower or supplier. A spokesperson for the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services told Newsweek this week that “current results point to lettuce or salad greens as a potential source for this outbreak, although other food items cannot be completely ruled out,” adding that no specific produce, grower or supplier had been identified. The Taco Bell connection The scrutiny on Taco Bell began after signs appeared at several Metro Detroit locations informing customers that lettuce, cilantro-onion blend, pico de gallo and guacamole were temporarily unavailable because of what the signs described as a nationwide recall. Local station WWJ first reported the signs, and photos circulated widely on social media in the days that followed. Taco Bell has not released a list of affected locations, and no formal recall notice tied to the chain has been posted publicly by the FDA as of this writing. Yum Brands addressed the situation directly on Tuesday. “The health and safety of our guests is our top priority,” the company said in a statement. “Public health officials have not confirmed a link to Taco Bell or any specific ingredient, supplier, restaurant or retailer.” The company said it had removed the limited ingredients “as a precautionary measure” and would continue monitoring the situation alongside public health authorities. Yum’s stock dropped as much as 4.5 percent after the Washington Post report became public, according to CNBC. It remains unclear, based on public reporting, whether any confirmed Taco Bell customers have been diagnosed with cyclosporiasis. Health officials have described the Taco Bell angle as one thread among several being pulled in a broader traceback investigation that has not yet reached a conclusion. Taylor Farms and the unanswered supply chain question Taylor Farms, a Salinas, California-based produce processor, has been named repeatedly in connection with the outbreak by food-safety trackers and consumers piecing together supply information, since the company supplies shredded lettuce and other fresh produce to a long list of national restaurant chains. No federal agency has publicly confirmed that Taylor Farms product is the source of this summer’s illnesses, and the company has not issued a public statement addressing this specific outbreak as of this writing. Taylor Farms has been at the center of past foodborne illness investigations. In 2013, the FDA traced a cyclospora outbreak that sickened hundreds of people in Iowa and Nebraska to a salad mix from Taylor Farms de Mexico served at Olive Garden and Red Lobster locations. That earlier episode, more than a decade removed from the current one, illustrates how difficult these investigations can be. Cyclospora does not spread person to person, and because bagged and shredded produce moves quickly through the supply chain and has a short shelf life, contaminated lots are frequently gone from stores and restaurants long before testing can confirm a match. How big the outbreak has grown State-level data reviewed by news organizations this week shows 2026 is shaping up as the worst year for cyclosporiasis on record in the United States, with case totals already exceeding the previous high of roughly 4,700 illnesses set in 2019. More than 30 states have reported at least some cases this season, though nineteen states, mostly in the West and parts of the South, had not reported any cases through early July, according to CDC data reviewed by Forbes. Health officials have said they expect case counts to keep rising through the end of August, which marks the traditional close of the cyclosporiasis season in the United States. The CDC has also acknowledged that its confirmed case count trails what states are reporting on their own, in part because of a built-in reporting lag of roughly six weeks between when someone gets sick and when a case is confirmed at the federal level. Analysis The gap between what state health departments are reporting and what the CDC has formally confirmed is not unusual for an outbreak this size, but it does raise a fair question about how quickly the public is getting a full picture. Cyclospora surveillance took a hit last year when the Foodborne Diseases Active Surveillance Network, a partnership among the CDC, the USDA, the FDA and ten state health departments, stopped tracking six of the eight pathogens it had monitored, cyclospora among them, because of funding constraints. That reduction in tracking capacity does not explain this outbreak’s size on its own, but it is a relevant piece of context for readers trying to understand why case numbers seem to shift so often and why a definitive source has been so hard to pin down. Taco Bell’s caution in removing ingredients before any link was confirmed reflects a familiar corporate playbook after past produce scares, protect customers first, manage the narrative second. That approach is reasonable on its face. But it also means the public is left waiting on investigators, not the company or its suppliers, for the facts that matter most: which farm, which lot, and which restaurants were actually affected. Symptoms, testing and prevention Cyclosporiasis typically causes watery diarrhea, sometimes described as frequent or explosive, along with bloating, cramping, nausea, fatigue and loss of appetite. Left untreated, symptoms can last for weeks and, in some cases, more than a month, with the potential to relapse even after they seem to have cleared up. The illness is generally not life-threatening, and health officials have reported no deaths connected to this outbreak so far. The CDC recommends that anyone with prolonged watery diarrhea contact a healthcare provider and specifically ask for cyclospora testing, since the parasite will not reliably show up on a standard stool test. A confirmed infection is typically treated with a ten-day course of the antibiotic trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, sold under brand names including Bactrim and Septra. Because Cyclospora spreads through food or water contaminated with human feces rather than through casual contact, health officials say washing produce under running water, cutting away bruised or damaged sections of fruits and vegetables, and refrigerating pre-cut produce promptly all reduce risk, even though washing alone will not fully eliminate the parasite once it is present. Investigators in Michigan and at the federal level say the traceback effort is continuing, and updated case numbers are expected in the coming days as more lab results are confirmed. "So... We got the exploding diarrhea. Here's my advice for anyone who doesn't have it yet: It's going to take a minute for the government to pin down where this is coming from, and then issue a recall, because the FDA has been gutted. But, I can tell you, without a shadow of a doubt : this is coming from Taylor Farms produce, and you will see them recalled. You'll want to avoid all #TaylorFarms produce in the grocery store. They supply #McDonalds, #KFC, #PizzaHut, about any fast food place you can think of. Raspberries, watermelons, cilantro, and the veggies you're hearing about are not causing this many people to get sick. It's the shredded #lettuce, specifically, that's the problem. But, you'll want to stay away from every type of produce this company puts out, because one strand of shredded lettuce is all it takes to contaminate bushels. "Taylor Farms is the source. #TacoBell proactively pulled their produce from their restaurants. You're going to see other fast food places doing this, and probably will see that before the government names a source. The #FDA knows this, but they can't come out and tell us all until there's proof, which takes resources and research, which takes manpower, but the FDA has been cut by about 20-30%. During the Biden term, onions at McDonald's had ecoli. We knew this because DNA testing was done quickly and they were able to narrow it down to one place that caused the outbreak. And, it was traced back to Taylor Farms. This isn't going to be solved as quickly though. When you get this, make a virtual appointment to your PCP - a "same day sick" appointment. Tell them someone in your family just tested for this and was positive and was prescribed Bactrim. If you go in person, they're probably going to make you poop in a cup and wait until results come back to prescribe. You'll know when you get this. Trust me on all of this. You'll want to stay hydrated because this parasite damages the lining of the small intestine. Your small intestine, in turn, secretes more water into the gut, and less nutrients and liquid are able to remain in the body. So no matter how much you shit, you're going to want to drink. A day of this leads to dehydration if you don't increase your fluid intake, and a few days will land you in the hospital. If you have headaches, weakness, muscle cramps, dizziness, or an increase heart rate - hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Go to the ER for fluids if you can't drink enough.
