Am... am flabbergasted.... b TWICE in less than a year... two plotters.. asked me what are blackberries for!! good grief!! one, an immigrant, was amazed when I told him they're edible and delicious, he made a disgusted face.... the other a local with the plot right next to mine, also asked what are they for. I said they're edible and delicious and grown all around you; offered one fruit from a box I'd just filled in from the nearby bushes, she made a face and refused. Goodness gracious me. I rest my case. Am not telling them am having a handful of them in goat yogurt, for breakfast, lest they run away in fright. Picked up some new potatoes over a couple of weeks; thanks to blackbirds digging for worms, they pull them up clean and tidy. nice. #allotment #food #blackbirds #potatoes #yogurt #breakfast #blackberries

When my partner's sister was in college, she had a roommate who was a princess in some minor European nobility. The princess part doesn't really matter -- she was very nice -- except for the implied life of privilege. One day, the princess was going to the grocery store and asked if anyone needed anything. "Potatoes please!". When the princess returned, she said "I'm very sorry, but the potatoes were all dirty". I think of her every year while harvesting ... #garden #food #potatoes

No hose ban here... yet... been to the plot. 9 till 1130, watered the lot, plucked weeds, trimmed the olive and the Hazel bush, pulled up broadbeans and planted spuds. Spuds found dumped, a dozen of them, in the general compost heap, with rootlets so, yeah, why not. Testing a tarpaulin for leaks in view of using a tub as a pond, rather, pond already there but it dries out, ideally placing the tub in it so as to keep water during dry months. Will report. #allotment #gardening #potatoes #weeds #olive #broadbeans #pond

When your potato plants start flowering, it’s a key sign: the tubers are forming underground! 💧 Boost watering now to support healthy growth and plump potatoes. Keep soil moist but not waterlogged for the best harvest. 🥔 #gardeningtips #potatoes Grow guide here: https://vegplotter.com/grow-guides/potato

1st of July - New Potato Day! (For me anyway. Apparently the Feast Day of Saints Peter and Paul, which was a couple of days ago, is often recognised as such). Not a bad haul from the first three plants! They tasted good too! 😋 #newpotatoes #potatoes #allotmentgardening #gardening | #kent #england

Neither fried nor boiled: why cooking a sprouted potato DOES NOT eliminate the risk that concerns food safety experts https://okdiario.com/metabolic/en/nutrition/neither-fried-nor-boiled-why-cooking-a-sprouted-potato-does-not-eliminate-the-risk-that-concerns-food-safety-experts-27111/?utm_source=flipboard&utm_content=Econopass%2Fmagazine%2FFLIPBOARD+EXCHANGE+FEED+%F0%9F%97%9E%EF%B8%8F You open the pantry, reach for the potatoes, and there they are, little pale shoots poking out like the bag has been quietly growing dinner without … #foodsafety #potatoes #warning

@jmax@mastodon.social The question is: Are they actually dead at that point? What constitutes death for a plant? It's not lack of brain activity. Warning: Go too far down this road and you realize that the #potatoes that will happily begin growing shoots if you leave them in the sack for too long are alive and screaming when you drop them into boiling water. https://doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190687724.003.0010 After all, part of the point of #cooking is to kill otherwise still-alive organisms before eating. @cstross@wandering.shop #ValentinesDay #biology #botany
