I really love reading. I used to read mostly #scifi and #fantasy, so you could often find me with my nose buried in #Discworld, #Tolkien, The #Witcher, or #HarryPotter back in school. These days, I also enjoy classic literature by "great authors". And yes, I'm now an expert in children's books because I read to my son every night before bed #kidsbooks. Sadly, I don't have much time for other reading these days. 3/5

There's a lot of wisdom and truth to be found in Sir Terry Pratchett's writing, and I think that this quote is so indicative of that, and so effective at getting the point across in the simplicity of what Granny Weatherwax is saying. It's also characteristic of how, even at his wittiest and most caustic, and even when he was writing his most grumpy and no-nonsense characters, he never succumbed to cynicism and misanthropy. There are a lot of things making the Discworld books special, and the amount of heart that can be found in those stories and characters is probably at the top part of that list. #GNUTerryPratchett #TerryPratchett #Discworld #books #Bookstodon #quote

I am currently rather enjoying my first read-through of the Discworld series by Sir Terry Pratchett. As of today, I am a stone's throw away from finishing Interesting Times and starting Maskerade (probably later tonight). The quote below was the first quote that I deemed worthy of retaining for posterity, upon my first reading of The Colour of Magic. ---------------------------------- "His was the air of one who is unjustly put upon, who is dreaded and feared, yet who is the only friend of the poor and the best doctor for the mortally wounded.... @thepurpleoctopus@lgbtqia.space again, I am reminded of a moment in Small Gods (1992) by Terry Pratchett in which an engineer and a philosopher argue on which books to save from a vast library about to be destroyed by religious zealouts: Some books teach people how to live better while some books teach people how to *be* people. #discworld

Re: the "cats are nice" Discworld quote. One of my favourite ongoing themes from the books is Death's affectionate relationship with cats. I think it's deeply representative of Pratchett's talent. Apart from his trademark caustic humour, he managed to make the embodiment of the Grim Reaper a complex, sympathetic, even arguably kind character. Death is someone who genuinely cares about people, carries a fierce sense of justice, experiences loneliness, and ultimately forms a deeply caring bond with cats. This has always been one of my favourite officially licensed Discworld illustrations by Boris Sokolovsky, which I think depicts that angle of Death perfectly. #Discworld #TerryPratchett #Books #Bookstodon #art #MastoArt #Cat #Cats
