"Handses!" said Gollum. "Wrong," said Bilbo, who had luckily just taken his hand out again. "Guess again!" "S-S-S-S-S," said Gollum more upset than ever. He thought of all the things he kept in his own pockets: fishbones, goblins' teeth, wet shells, a bit of bat-wing, a sharp stone to sharpen his fangs on, and other nasty things. He tried to think what other people kept in their pockets. #tolkien #thehobbit

Long and searchingly he questioned the dwarves about their doings, and where they were going to, and where they were coming from; but he got little more news out of them than out of Thorin. They were surly and angry and did not even pretend to be polite. "What have we done, O king?" said Balin, who was the eldest left. #tolkien #thehobbit

I really love reading. I used to read mostly #scifi and #fantasy, so you could often find me with my nose buried in #Discworld, #Tolkien, The #Witcher, or #HarryPotter back in school. These days, I also enjoy classic literature by "great authors". And yes, I'm now an expert in children's books because I read to my son every night before bed #kidsbooks. Sadly, I don't have much time for other reading these days. 3/5

Tolkien‘s linguistic inventions are startlingly creative. In ordinary story telling, invented languages rarely appear, and if they do, they are just superficial props. But each of Tolkien‘s languages is complete—dare I say, “Turing complete”—equipped with its own origin story, evolutionary history, regional dialects, cultural functions, fully formed script, pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, idioms. #Tolkien’s originality, ingenuity, thoroughness, industry, and process could serve as inspirations in designing new #programming languages. We still stand to gain much, even if we #IT practitioners do no more than to look upon Tolkien’s life work as mere aspirations.

I hesitate to mention that unwittingly, or perhaps somewhat wittingly in Jack Lewis's case, the #Inklings have played a decisive role in blurring the lines between historiography and fantasy-writing. I wish to be charitable towards #Tolkien (and even Lewis, though he smells quite rotten to me) but this is why I say that perhaps he should have examined his doubts about hurling so much of himself, the better part of his power in fact, into the legendarium... ...oh dear. Oh dear oh dear. (cont'd)

RE: https://urusai.social/@ami_angelwings/116925778503663518 I don't want to be too unoriginal when it comes to hot takes about PJ LOTR, but I would like to offer this thought. The full story of how Peter Jackson was allowed to make a mockery of The Lord of the Rings--a popular mockery, a profitable mockery, but still a mockery--has not been told and I will go so far as to speculate that the evil #tech barons who are now profiteering off #Tolkien symbolism must have played some role in the unprecedented funding of THREE gigantic blockbusters headed by a trashy horror-comedy director whose previous (and first) Hollywood movie was a dud called The Frighteners. I remember my own surprise when I first heard about it. It seemed like an extraordinary gamble, but what if Jackson was backed up by the promise of massive funding from villains such as the "PayPal mafia"? (cont'd)

#QuestionOfTheDay what's a scorching hot take you have about a hobby/genre/piece of fiction/work/etc that you're into? This has to be an actually hot take, bonus points if it's unique to you (as far as you know) or fairly weird/idiosyncratic #sports #fiction #anime #manga #writing #coding #videogames #gaming #ttrpg #ccgs #boardgames #comics #comicbooks #webcomic #music #musicals #books #tv #television #movies #film #art

Aww, i'm watching a bit of the movie The Fellowship of the Ring trying to find a scene that I want a screenshot of and i just came to the scene where Arwen and Aragon are talking on a bridge in Rivendell and she pledges her love to him. She gives him her pendant and he says "You cannot give me this" to which she replies "It is mine to give to whom I wish". i only just now realized the significance of this scene. Elves do not wear wedding rings. They wear pendants as a sign of their marriages. By giving him that pendant she was proposing to him! #Tolkien #LOTR

Who is this "J.R.R. Tolkian” clown, and who did he blow to get the novelization contracts for Peter Jackson's magnificent Lord of the Rings movies? Couldn't they have gotten a •decent• writer to write the novelizations? Tolkien got so many things wrong that I can hardly keep track of them all. Who is "Glorfindel", and why does he take so many of Arwen's best lines? Why did he leave out Aragorn having given up the throne in the beginning? What about Aragorn's wild wolf ride? That ride will probably be the basis of a theme-park ride some day, but when children look in the books to find it, it won't be there! Plus the books really aren't written to the appropriate age-level anyway. Everyone knows that novelizations should be aimed at the lowest age-group of the movie audience, in this case teens. Tolkien doesn't seem to have gotten that memo. And the Elves coming to save the day at the battle of Helm's Deep are totally missing - ANOTHER screw-up by that idiot Tolkien! Didn't he have a copy of the scripts to work from? Why did he change Faramir's character to be the exact OPPOSITE of the way he was in the movie? He's supposed to be tempted and try to take the Ring for his father, NOT to help Frodo from the beginning! Tolkien quoted Faramir's line to give it the precise opposite meaning of what Jackson intended when he wrote and filmed it. That's unforgivable! The Ents - Tolkien got that wrong in so many ways, too. They had to be •tricked• into marching against Saruman. And they didn't divert a river; they just smashed a dam that Saruman had stupidly forgotten about. See, Jackson's original, brilliant vision makes the point that you should never build your stronghold in a place where it can obviously be wiped out by smashing a dam, while that incompetent Tolkien seems to have been trying to preach some stupid message about abusing nature. Who is "Radagast the Brown"? Who is that ridiculous character Tom Bombadil, and why is Tolkien shoehorning him into Jackson's The Lord of the Rings? Someone should really have gone over the books before they were published and removed all the stupid, unnecessary characters that Tolkien added. Maybe Peter Jackson will do us all the great favor of removing them from future editions. And where are all the Gimli jokes? Doesn't Tolkien understand that dwarves are supposed to be FUNNY? Dwarf-tossing is KEY to the character of Gimli! Legolas should have been written hunkier, too. And Arwen's lips! There's no mention of Arwen's enormous, glistening lips! Tolkien's ridiculous ideas of morality are all wrong, as well. Who told Tolkien that he had the right to change Jackson's characters? People never do the right thing just because it's RIGHT; they must always start by doing wrong, and then be •tricked• into doing the right thing or realize that they made a mistake and seek redemption. And what was with that stupid after-the end bit, with the hobbits returning to the Shire and finding Saruman? WRONG, WRONG, WRONG! That's not in the movies. The final straw is Tolkien going all crazy with the Appendices. All I can say is, this guy has some nerve, thinking he can change and expand on Peter Jackson's brilliant words. I suppose no-talent hacks like Tolkien deserve to make a living too, but not by sullying Jackson's brilliant dialog and plots. I have to wonder who Tolkien slept with to get the novelization contract for The Lord of the Rings? I just hope that they get someone GOOD to do the novelization of The Hobbit - maybe Jackson would be willing to do it himself. /snark, because Eru help us, some people actually believed that I was SERIOUS! #Tolkien #Humor #Humour #Sarcasm #Snark #TLOTR

Da Pope has dropped an #encyclical. An encyclical is a pastoral letter issued by the #Pope. Historically encyclicals serve as a key instrument of the Pope’s ordinary magisterium to guide the faithful on matters of faith, morals, devotion, or social discipline, they are generally not infallible pronouncements ex cathedra. I’m still reading and digesting, but a quick skim suggests that this is the biggest thing to drop from the #Vatican in my lifetime. There’s, #AI, there’s transhumanism, there’s social contract, he apologizes for the Church’s blind eye to #slavery, he declared that “just war” is no longer a thing…in a change of policy held since the Crusades. He calls for #OpenSource, he quotes #Tolkien. (I like Da Pope.) There’s a lot. You can read it here. It’s gonna take me a while to map it all out. https://www.vatican.va/content/leo-xiv/en/encyclicals/documents/20260515-magnifica-humanitas.html

Latin nerds, I need you! Offering Elvish nerdery in return 👇 Trying to translate "keep it secret – keep it safe" to #Latin, which I know is tricksy. Looking at verbs like servare and conservare, and adjectives for "safe" like tutus/salvus/securus...?? If you can help, I will write your phrase of choice in Tengwar (Elvish script)! Here's a sample of one way I write it – though I'll do straight lines 😅 I'll write them on a livestream and link image files for you. // #linguistics #LOTR #Tolkien

J. R. R. Tolkienin ”The Silmarillion” -eepokseen sekä ”Silmarillion”-suomennokseen (suom. Kersti Juva & Panu Pekkanen) perustuva adaptaatio julkaistaan myös englanniksi nimellä "The Canine Silmarillion". Katso lisätietoja QR-koodin takaa! The Finnish Tolkien Society is proud to make public the fruits of our relentless social media campaign #MauriPlease (est. 2015). Mauri Kunnas, the famed Finnish artist and author, is working on "The Canine Silmarillion" (Fin: “Koirien Silmarillion”)! Kunnas is internationally perhaps best known for “The Canine Kalevala” (orig. “Koirien Kalevala”), and his adaptation of J. R. R. Tolkien’s “The Silmarillion” is undoubtedly the most anticipated Tolkien work since the epic itself was published in 1977.
