There's a lot of wisdom and truth to be found in Sir Terry Pratchett's writing, and I think that this quote is so indicative of that, and so effective at getting the point across in the simplicity of what Granny Weatherwax is saying. It's also characteristic of how, even at his wittiest and most caustic, and even when he was writing his most grumpy and no-nonsense characters, he never succumbed to cynicism and misanthropy. There are a lot of things making the Discworld books special, and the amount of heart that can be found in those stories and characters is probably at the top part of that list. #GNUTerryPratchett #TerryPratchett #Discworld #books #Bookstodon #quote

I am currently rather enjoying my first read-through of the Discworld series by Sir Terry Pratchett. As of today, I am a stone's throw away from finishing Interesting Times and starting Maskerade (probably later tonight). The quote below was the first quote that I deemed worthy of retaining for posterity, upon my first reading of The Colour of Magic. ---------------------------------- "His was the air of one who is unjustly put upon, who is dreaded and feared, yet who is the only friend of the poor and the best doctor for the mortally wounded.... I'm in the midst of rereading #TerryPratchett's Thief of Time. It's one of my favorites. Lu-Tze is yet another good character. Susan is back helping Death save the world again, and we meet the forgotten fifth horseman of the apocalypse, whose alias Sir Terry came up with w/o realizing what it sounded like backward. Plus Igor. It's complicated, which is one of the things I like about it. Definitely not one I'd recommend to a newbie unless they dig a action/philosophical/chaos theory read. :)

This remains one of my favorite parts of Discworld, possibly of fiction in general:

Excerpt From Feet of Clay by Terry Pratchett where ~~ is used used to denote crossed out text, and ** is my added empathise:

Angua read it. It was a list of names, although most of them were crossed out:

‘Er … what do you think?’ said Cheery nervously. ‘“Lucinda”?’ said Angua, raising her eyebrows. ‘I’ve always liked the sound of the name.’ ‘“Cheri” is nice,’ said Angua. ‘And it is rather like the one you’ve got already. The way people spell in this town, no one will actually notice unless you point it out to them.’ Cheery’s shoulders sagged with released tension. When you’ve made up your mind to shout out who you are to the world, it’s a relief to know that you can do it in a whisper. ‘Cheri’, thought Angua. Now, what does that name conjure up? Does the mental picture include iron boots, iron helmet, a small worried face and a long beard? Well, it does now.
