Having never been to a Discworld Con before, I'm reading through the traditions page on the website to familiarise myself with some of what to expect. This entry is lovely: Silas T Firefly Sir Terry Pratchett was always happy to engage with his fans and attended the DWCons when he could, usually as Guest of Honour. Before becoming a famous author, Terry was a fan himself and understood how Conventions worked from both perspectives. This led to him fostering a good relationship with his fans and when he could, he would sit with folks in the bar, or other communal spaces of the hotel and chat casually with anyone and everyone. There was respect on both sides, but (whisper it not!) even famous authors get tired and need personal space. When Terry felt the need to be left alone, he would subtly indicate this by switching his badge to one that read Silas T Firefly. It was made common knowledge that if you were to meet someone around the hotel who had this badge that it might look like Terry Pratchett, but this was a completely different person. A very private individual who just wished a little peace… The name may be a reference to the Groucho Marx character Rufus T. Firefly in the 1933 movie Duck Soup. In memorandum, one Convention membership and badge is left free each year under this name. #GNUTerryPratchett #DWCon26

There's a lot of wisdom and truth to be found in Sir Terry Pratchett's writing, and I think that this quote is so indicative of that, and so effective at getting the point across in the simplicity of what Granny Weatherwax is saying. It's also characteristic of how, even at his wittiest and most caustic, and even when he was writing his most grumpy and no-nonsense characters, he never succumbed to cynicism and misanthropy. There are a lot of things making the Discworld books special, and the amount of heart that can be found in those stories and characters is probably at the top part of that list. #GNUTerryPratchett #TerryPratchett #Discworld #books #Bookstodon #quote

NEXT WEEK on #ThePlaylist I'm off to Discworld Con in a couple of weeks, so next week I think it's only fair that the theme should be: The Discworld Songs about wizards, and flying turtles, and DEATH, and THE DEATH OF RATS, will abound. Or just songs about discs, or worlds. Are there any flat Earth bangers? Sling them this way using #ThePlaylistSuggestion, and together we'll spend two hours attempting to make the memory of Sir Pterry proud. // https://stream.djdarren.site // Monday 19:00-21:00 UK // // https://djdarren.site/archive/podcast/ // :gnutp: #GnuTerryPratchett #Podcast #Music #DWCon26

A still relevant eulogy for one of the kindest author we ever had. Hover or focus to reveal Sensitive
There are bad authors, and there are good authors. Or, sadly, were. Sir Terry Pratchett was a good one. I cannot find the source, but there was a story, if my memory doesn't trick me, on tumblr. Let me try to quote the gist of the story how I remember it. If you have a screenshot, or a copy, I encourage you to provide it. I was waiting in the queue for the book to be signed by him. When it was my turn he asked me, to whom he should sign the book. I told him my name, and added quietly, as my parents were nearby: "for now". He, also quietly, asked: "and what it is going to be?" I told him my chosen name of the opposite gender. He thought for a moment, and he signed a book with a scribble, which could be plausible read as both, my old name, and my chosen one. When I had read this story for the first time, still being in my crossdressing phase, and thinking about my transition as something unattainable, I've cried a little bit. And even now, many years later, when I am thinking about that story, I am touched, and suddenly I have my eyes in a wet place. And let me remind you about two gems, which are important for the whole transgender community. One is Feet of Clay, with the Sergeant Cherri Littlebotom. The other one, Monstrous Regiment, with Private Oliver Perks. He was a kind person, and a good ally of transgender folks. Thank you. @samantha@beige.party for reminding me about it. You are being missed, Terry. You won't be forgotten. You were a humble person. But you are entitled to quote Horace. You have build a monument more permanent than bronze. You deserved it, and it is our duty, to remind it, again, and again, and again. I am going to cry a little bit now. There is a hole in my heart in your shape 💔 Rest in Peace. Thank you for everything. #GnuTerryPratchett
