Do you enjoy riding a bike in #Berlin? Do you hate drivers with a passion and enjoy when they face even minimal consequences for their laziness? Join me in taking photos of illegally parked cars and submitting them to the local Ordnungsamt, because that way they might think twice before blocking a bikelane or parking in the middle of a pedestrian crossing.

I think far too many things have been absurdly overcomplicated beyond their need. Shell scripts were fine. curl-hash-run doesn’t need nodejs. Ansible and Chef are actually overkill if you’ve only got one or three annoying pet servers left at work. The burden and overhead of having to constantly update the automation that was supposed to make your life simpler isn’t worth it.
You can do a lot more as a team when you only use brand name tools where they actually make sense, and write some bash otherwise. And guess what - if you come back to a bash script 3 years later you won’t first have to jump through 17 version updates, schema changes, and major schisms in the best practice wars that happened while you didn’t pay attention.
Unfortunately, the popular interpretation is one also favoured by Doctorow who has promoted the nonsense idea that “capitalism got worse” as the backbone of his theory, mostly rooted in the idea that the true problem we are experiencing right now is the inherent nature coming home to westerners, not that the exploitation and abuse are inherent in the system.
Which is why I fucking hate “enshittification” as a concept as it absolves the system. It’s a distraction from what should be an awakening to the inequality we live under, and the need for global solidarity.

This is far too many words to say “go fuck yourself”
LLM users respect a chatbot more than potential contributors is the worst part of all this. Everyone was capable of writing basic docs all along. They just didn’t want to for a fellow human.
I don’t know what exactly is it when you treat people as things and things as people, but it sure is fucking gross.
Damn, 11 years… GNU Terry Pratchett. I am thankful to have grown up on his books. Getting Hogfather one year was definitely the best book gift I had ever received, and started me off on an incredible journey (supported by a local library) that’s definitely helped me define my self and my values.
There are many faults you can point to in the TV adaptations, but preserving this dialogue verbatim is what keeps that film in my end of the year holidays rotation.
The Grammarly thing is incredible. Just wholesale stealing people’s identities to promote randomly generated feedback based on their scraped public personae
LLMs are incredible at accelerating the decay of all social norms. How is this reality?
This was a bad look considering the "enthusiast" opinion on Firefox and AI, but it's a worse look considering the fact that this is a Mozilla blog openly talking about working with war criminals who have just planned the bombing of a school and murder of girls in Iran.
Publishing this was a choice, and it's a choice that reflect poorly on whether there are any remaining shared values in our communities. Doing so in the immediate aftermath of the revelations about Anthropic's collaboration with the US war machine means that Mozilla is trying to help them launder the image.
https://blog.mozilla.org/en/firefox/hardening-firefox-anthropic-red-team/
So Anthropic’s values include planning a strike on a school and planning a second strike to then assassinate first responders. This presumably comes from working closely with Israel who routinely do this in Palestine, Lebanon, and Syria - or perhaps just a consequence of the closeness of the US-Israeli relationship and the fact that both countries are generally prone to murder and war crimes.
And I see… absolutely 0 outrage from the end users? Is this the new era, no values, not even stopping at companies fully committed to Claude and similar? This is a fucking nightmare. This isn’t using a Microsoft product and claiming it’s too hard to get off it. This is a pile of generative shit that didn’t exist 5 years ago, and somehow there are no moral or ethical lines that can’t be crossed.
Using LLM backed codegen to falsely relicense from copyleft licensing like LGPL to anything resembling MIT/BSD style licensing isn't just laundering code - it's an active attack on the labour aspect of the free software movement. It is an attempt to undo forcing cooperation by using the existing copyright system, subverting the very commons which they plundered to create these tools.
This is why playing by the rules rarely gets you change.
It is time! After 4 years at my current job, I am in need of change. I'm looking for a new role in the world of SRE, infrastructure, and platform building. I've worked on building clouds, building on clouds, moving to clouds, moving from clouds, and all other sorts of things that do not sound real to people who do not work in tech.
I thrive in environments with autonomy, especially ones where technical teams aren't just given freedom to decided how to build things, but allowed input on what and when too. I've built resilient and reliable platforms for which I've had no issue being on-call, with team health coming first.
Based in Berlin, Germany, but looking for ideally remote/possibly hybrid opportunities.
