Today in Labor History August 4, 1964: Civil rights workers Michael Schwerner, Andrew Goodman and James Chaney were found dead in Mississippi after disappearing on June 21. They were activists with the Congress of Racial Equality promoting voting registration among African Americans. DHS surveilled peaceful protesters and then yanked their Global Entry, federal lawsuit alleges April Walker, a San Diego resident, was observing federal immigration agents in a Target parking lot in April when she said they boxed her in and pointed a camera at her face and license plate. 👉 She said she never provided her driver’s license and the agents only moved their vehicles and allowed her to leave after she called 911. ❌ Five days later, she learned that her Global Entry, which provides expedited TSA screening, had been revoked. ⚠️ It was only reinstated, she said, after she contacted a reporter who then reached out to the Department of Homeland Security to inquire about the revocation. Walker laid out her story in a federal lawsuit, filed Friday in the Southern District of California, alleging that agents working for Homeland Security deployed facial recognition technology and license plate information to surveil people observing and documenting federal immigration enforcement. Homeland Security then used that information to revoke Global Entry privileges in retaliation, the lawsuit alleges. “Now more than ever, those of us who have the privilege to speak out have a responsibility to defend the rights of everyone in our communities,” Walker said in a statement. 🔥“When people are punished for exercising their First Amendment rights, we begin losing the democratic principles that protect all of us. Lifelong activist, organizer and educator Denise Oliver-Vélez has died at the age of 78. She was a central figure in the civil rights movements of the 1960s and 1970s and was the first woman elected to the Young Lords Central Committee, a radical Puerto Rican human rights group modeled on the Black Panther Party, which Oliver-Vélez was also a member of. Deep into the middle of society, many people genuinely believe that age checks for social media, or even for using computers in general, are a good thing because they "protect the children." (note they use the same argument for everything, see: trans rights, censorship, etc) That isn't wisdom. It's either naïve or deeply stupid. And it reveals a familiar centrist habit: a profound misunderstanding of what's actually happening, wrapped in a comforting sense of moral superiority. These are often the same people who insist that left-wing activists are "just as bad as Nazis." The same people who tell you mass surveillance isn't a problem if you have "nothing to hide." The same people for whom democracy begins and ends with casting a ballot every few years, while activism, protest, civil disobedience, and organised dissent are treated as nuisances rather than essential parts of a healthy democracy. Authoritarianism rarely arrives wearing jackboots. It's irrelevant that they were looking for somebody else. If they had killed the person they were looking for, it's just as bad. Everybody deserves due process.
