It wasn't until I was about to graduate high school that I finally started running out of space on that network share. My first computer which ran Windows 98 for the longest time had a 40GB hard drive. Now retro computing enthusiasts often have little binders of SD cards with various OS builds on them since you can fit an entire early 2000s gaming PC's storage on a 64GB SD card and it'll be faster and more reliable than period hardware

They'll hack the firmware to start overwriting older files once it runs out of real capacity, so its likely in actuality a low quality 64gb or similar SD card. Also these scam flash storage devices tend to use the lowest quality flash that's even more likely to die suddenly and without warning than a regular SD card from a reputable manufacturer (which also tend to die suddenly, without warning and sooner than you'd expect) If you need bulk external storage for a backup I'd be looking at an external spinning hard drive or an external USB SSD from a reputable manufacturer and through reputable channels to avoid these scam flash devices that are all over the less reputable market channels (personally I only buy SD cards from physical retail stores because the scam flash devices are so prevelant on e-commerce sites)

I'm anticipating this will be a 1-2 week read (and usually I take about a month to finish a book!) I'll have to dig into the authors other works as well. I also just received another inter-library loan that I wasn't expecting, I'd requested it last year but it was too new so I thought it was just cancelled but apparently not! It's a sequel to a YA novel I'd happened to find at a thrift store and read going "this is giving me young adult vibes" before I confirmed it was. Really cool world building, the YA aspects are eh. The book was called The Floating World by Axie Oh and now I have the sequel queued up to read as well (and a few new books on my e-reader after that!)

There's a little museums just 2 blocks from my home that I've lived in for 5 years now and I've never been. There's a mine tour in town that I've also never gone on despite living in this town for a good decade now. It's so easy to never go to the local attractions because why would you? It'll still be there next weekend/next season/once the kids are older!

@zed @Mimesatwork if it requires a fee to enter the bathroom, it isn't accessible to everyone because some people might simply not have change on them, or might not have enough money at all to pay to go to the bathroom. As far as I'm concerned, access to bathroom facilities is a human right and should be available to all, regardless of your ability to pay. Funnily enough this is an area that the United States actually does pretty well at. Almost every public space has a public restroom. I've gone to the bathroom at the freaking state capital multiple times for the simple reason that it was the nearest public building so I knew the restrooms would be available to me.

Toothbrushing wasn't really needed before sugar and fruits became so readily available via the Atlantic slave trade. Diets before then didn't have enough sugars to damage teeth within a normal lifespan, but suddenly sugary sweet fruits that were only available a few weeks out of the year could be had year round, and ground sugar could be added into anything to make it sweeter. In fact, regular toothbrushing itself was not a common habit until after the World Wars as veterans returned home and continued the practice. Fluoride toothpaste was only introduced in 1955, and before that most toothpastes were made with baking soda and hydrogen peroxide (yuck!)

I stopped scrolling on my phone before bed and switched to reading. Started with a few books I'd read when I was a teenager, and I've branched out from there. Thriftbooks has been a nice in-between of spending money on books I own so its no pressure to read immediately, but not spending $20 a book on books I may or may not like. That and sometimes I get lucky at the thrift stores! I hope you can find your way back to joy of reading!

Broken Earth sounds right up my alley, if perhaps potentially more depressing than I want right now. Placed a hold for an ebook to circle back to in a few weeks
Night circus just did not pique my interest
Starless Sea looks really interesting though
Space Between Worlds Sounds brilliant & I just ordered from a neighboring library to be my next read
Dark Matter also sounds interesting, but my immediate reaction is mixed. Also placed a hold for an ebook to circle back to in a few weeks

Regarding your followup questions, alt history piques my interest more than time loop (I don't think I've read any timeloop books though!). I recently read an interesting alt history/secret society book called A Clockwork Dynasty which I thoroughly enjoyed. Surreal/trippy sounds less enjoyable to me, but again, I'm not sure I've read any books that fit that description

@jilleduffy I love how this new paradigm of remote work is causing managers to grapple with the fact that even your best employees don't work 100% of the work day, whether that's in person or remote. It's just where previously it was idle chit chat at the water cooler, solitaire and doodles at the desk now it might be the person going for a walk, painting or even quickly switching a load of laundry during downtime between tasks. it's very important for anyone who does mental work to take brain breaks however that looks for them! Your brain is a muscle and no muscle should be overexerted 40 hours a week for 50 years straight

@bitinn I'm in a wonky spot in this regard. My company doesn't require AI use, but the CTO is extremely excited for the possibilities it presents to save people time on tasks, and given how close I work to the CTO that means I should be using it. It's also become my play to get a job offer from being an independent contractor, as AI appears to be the only project that is getting enough new capital greenlit to bridge the gap on getting me a job offer as someone who's run local models at home. The problem of course is, I'm becoming increasingly jaded on AI and increasingly believe most of the applications of AI in the org will be replaced either with a human or with traditional code as soon as the license cost starts balooning (which it will sooner or later!)

@grumpy_website having assisted a number of "not computer people" with learning how to do something on the computer, o rapidly learned that anything that isn't a clearly defined button is greatly confusing to those who already struggle enough with computers. Any kind of interaction that requires a gesture, scroll, hover, swipe, long-press, and sometimes even right-click greatly increases the difficulty level of the interaction for many users (and makes it harder to perform on over a very slow remote connection or on a very slow system, as well as more likely to fail if it's accessed in a manner not initially anticipated) I'd honestly argue it's just bad UI practice at this point

Yes many men have zero clue about anything related to a uterus, but I could absolutely see it as some engineer calculating the mass budget for the question of "do we have sufficient payload budget for any menstrual products this astronaut may need?" And the answer being a half-joking "well is 100 tampons sufficient?" There's so many ways that often-reported quote could have been entirely reasonable and not entirely based in poor understanding of women's anatomy. @kottke for those who aren't at all close to farming, John Deere's anti-repair practices have actually inflated the value of antique tractors to the point where many smaller farms rely exclusively on tractors and equipment from the 50s and 60s because it's equipment they can actually fix themselves or call out someone local to fix instead of waiting days or weeks for a "certified" mechanic to drive out from hundreds of miles away, thereby potentially delaying extremely time-sensitive processes like planting or harvesting (where even delaying by a day can be make or break for the year's profitability!) Choosing to use less efficient pre-computer farm equipment has been far more of a risk management choice than a financial or sentimental one for many farmers for quite some time now

@blogdiva @Mastodon @imanijoy this was my first thought as well, it should probably default to "ask me every time" before adding a given user to a collection (with of course options to opt out and opt in to inclusion in collections), and probably include the collection name/info in the follower request/notification if the new follower is following via a collection. Probably should also be easy for a user to see a full list of what collections they've been included in and to remove themselves from a collection if desired, maybe even including a message sent to the collection owner when they do so? I'm just thinking through all of the potential abuse scenarios and how to best mitigate them without completely gutting functionality

With enough tuning you can get a really believable result on a recorded video but live video is still really hard to consistently achieve since the machine learning models produce so many errors and you can't just edit around them or rerun it for different results

@FossThought @nickofnz the oil we're burning is actually older than that. Usually dating back to the Carboniferous Period about 300MYA. So many giant trees and such an oxygen rich atmosphere but without the microbes yet to decompose the dead trees, literal tons of organic matter piled up and eventually became buried and over millions of years and is now oil and coal. There will be more oil, it just takes a few million years for the processes that produce it to do their thing. Not super relevant to your post but just I find all of that so fascinating. We're literally burning dead bugs and trees from 300MYA to drive our kids to school and commute to our offices (all concepts *we invented*) and we can invent an even better more pleasant world that's cleaner and more sustainable for us to live in!

I got laid off at the end of '24, managed to snag a new role which ended up literally making up reasons to fire me (probably because I don't hate myself, women and minorities like the owners do), got brought back on by my old role as a part time contractor, except old/new employer has been talking about wanting to hire me but keeps having changes in C-suite (the only layer of management that hasn't approved getting me a job offer) so I've just been in limbo for the last year or so now. I've had multiple brilliant interviews that in any other job market would have resulted in a brilliant job offer, except either someone else looked slightly better, or the org flat out decided not to fill the role after all! I just have to keep reminding myself that I'm making good money while literally working part time doing easy-for-me work and to enjoy it while it lasts. It's the uncertainty that gets me!

My predecessor had orchestrated the systems to use a shared login per site shared amongst all computer users at that site. The password is almost always [our generic temporary password]+[slowly iterated number that gets increased by 1 every password change] needless to say we've been slowly ungumming things in part by starting to migrate away from shared accounts but there's a number of custom processes which require only a single account at the site to do something so it's quite a project to unpick this previous poor decision

People who would interpret any bug or unexpected behavior of their devices as some hacker trying to cause chaos in their life, so they'd install a bunch of random crap from the Internet that doesn't do what they think it would, and of course they get the sketchiest possible versions of this software so now their computer does in fact act quite oddly as it has a bunch of stuff running 24/7 in the background popping scary notifications to try to milk more money out of them. This was all pre-ChatGPT for better and for worse, but I always wondered what could ideally be done for these poor folks who are clearly suffering

"I've added [user/domain] to the deny list for [service]" clearly communicates even to non-technical users exactly what has changed. I suppose you could also substitute "block" for "deny" depending on the context but that's a bit less universal since "block" colloquially suggests a complete and total denial, where that may not be the real world effect of the deny list in question
