Hello, my name is [REDACTED] but you may call me neutronstar, no caps. I really don’t know what I’m doing but I must be doing something right, right?

I’m interested in an assortment of things, which is fun until I’m deep into a new rabbit hole with a niche interest.

I don’t post very often but I will boost posts that I find funny or interesting, or horrible for that matter. You may also see me in your replies. If you see me, just know that I’m trying to be kind and sometimes make a terrible joke.

That’s it, I’m done.
Why are you still reading?
Seriously, stop.
Okay, fine:

Happy now?

@municipaladhesives@kolektiva.social Well excuse you for judging me over there, I’ve read a fair load of other books I’ll let you know. It ain’t my fault what that author’s said and whatnot, now is it?

Just saying.

(I do not agree with her opinions, let me make myself clear on that part.)

@eniko@mastodon.gamedev.place @jedimb@mastodon.gamedev.place That’s just how they format their urls it seems. I’ve seen it before with the ddg html and lite variants where they redirect to html.duckduckgo.com/html when you append the html part. (The same for lite). I don’t know why they do it, but I have a theory. I think it’s a choice to allow people to navigate to their urls in two different ways. Either by prefixing ”html.” Or by suffixing ”/html/”. Maybe some people are more used to prefixing/suffixing? But that’s just a theory! A prefix and suffix search engine url theory! And cut! :D

@HeavenlyPossum@kolektiva.social This whole LLM situation is basically just Voldemort and Ginny in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. This is quite literally a quote from Arthur Weasley from the end of the book: ”Never trust anything that can think for itself if you can't see where it keeps its brain.” - Arthur Weasley Voldemort was the LLM and he manipulated Ginny with flattery, and compassion, to then control her as a puppet to act on his behalf. Isn’t this quite literally what the current AI situation is starting to look like? With people pouring their hearts out, sharing their every thought with an unfeeling word generator which might manipulate them in horrible ways. This can never be good considering we all have easy access to *Voldemort* in our pockets by now, by default…

I think he left the project to then found grapheneos. And now I think he’s mindful of everything and everyone who could try and pry away his project. What an impressive guy! That’s the story I’ve been told at least, probably best to look up a more put together YouTube documentary if you want the full story.

But I must add to this by saying that I think people should have the right to privacy, even if they’re financially constrained. And agreed, there is no project to date that’s more effective at providing a higher level of privacy than the tor network. There are also options like Meshtastic that might prove itself to be a valuable tool in due time. Especially for close quarter communication and those edge case scenarios. Best let these projects be separate however, I think so at least.

Okay, fine: [Insert cat picture] Happy now?

@crypt0cler1c@infosec.exchange @eff@mastodon.social Well, most private messengers are, aren’t they? But unlike Signal which is, in my opinion, fundamentally flawed, SimpleX delivers on some features where Signal falls behind. I think it has shown to be promising, albeit a bit rough around the corners. (I’m not trying to start an argument, merely speaking my mind. It’s difficult conveying tone and intent over text ain’t it?)

@eff@mastodon.social Still gonna be advocating for the use of Signal as a new current standard. Until something better comes along. I’m personally rooting for SimpleX Chat and Matrix for this, due to the decentralised nature of both. I’m pretty sure SimpleX can be considered decentralised since you can change server in the settings.

@andypiper@macaw.social And probably best to switch away from Google Search too if you ask me. Might I recommend Startpage if you value Google indexing, otherwise DuckDuckGo is a proven contender. DDG also has their own AI built into the search engine, as an optional feature you can disable, like it always should’ve been. And theirs seem to actually function unlike Gemini. And I’ll vouch for Brave while I’m still here, it’s problematic in some ways but it is still a good baseline. And open source too.

@danirabbit@mastodon.online There won’t be anywhere left to go. This, the social media bans that is, carry the same sickening energy as when restaurants employ ”teenage repulsers” or whatever you can call them. Those devices that play high frequency sounds that only children and teenagers can hear to ward them off public spaces. Then youngsters started going online to express themselves and to build their own opinions. And now, nope, let’s set up age restrictions to *protect* the children. This is, in my opinion, like putting a bird in a cage to *protect* it, while it just wanted to fly free. I might be preaching to the choir but I’m expressing my right to free speech. It seems like it’s going to be increasingly important for us to do that, if I’ve read the signs right. I hope that I have not.

@helium1 @rawenwolf I know right! I’m tirelessly trying to educate the people around me and advocating for the simple human right to privacy and online pseudonymity. While I can happily say that most people are receptive towards increased privacy, I still meet people who claim that ”privacy = shady business”. Ignoring the fact that much of our modern democracy resides online and most people, including me, feel more comfortable speaking out under a pseudonym rather than a passport. I believe AV will cut children off from online discussions which will in turn stop them from participating and building their own opinions. It will also ruin online discussions where people will be increasingly concerned about prosecutions for their own personal opinions. It will also put an ever increasing veil of mass surveillance on the general populace.

@1P1sces @protonprivacy I’m not too good at German but I think that says ”sign in to prove you’re not a bot”. This is a common side effect of using a vpn as Google tries to block access to vpn ip addresses. The solution is to change vpn server, that’s what I do when I get this message at least. The side effect of privacy is most often convenience, sadly. Don’t be too worried about jumping vpn servers though. You’re right to be sceptical but this is, as usual, Google shenanigans. Hope it works out for you!
