Mornings. Mornings never change. Since the dawn of humankind, when our ancestors first discovered the horrible power of the sun rousing them from their slumber, waking up has hardly improved. The Mesopotamians cursed the rooster. The Victorians paid knocker-uppers to bang on their windows with sticks. Today we subject ourselves to obnoxious ringtones at 7:00 AM that trigger a visceral fight-or-flight response that would make a sabertooth tiger blush. We have harnessed the power of the roasted bean and the dried leaf, consuming liquids so caffeinated we suspect they could revive the recently deceased... just to maintain a simulacrum of consciousness. But mornings are not, as we sometimes wish, the end of the world. Instead, each morning is merely the literal dawn of a new day in a modern capitalist hellscape. The details change, but mornings... mornings never change.
