@MicroSFF@mastodon.art Yesterday at the supermarket checkout in front of me was a boy of maybe 8, 9 years or so who only wanted his bottle deposit back. What warmed my heart was that he had a whole arm full of library books. I wouldn't have pegged him as a reader, but apparently he was. I loved seeing that.

@pdcawley@mendeddrum.org I am a bit conflicted about this. On one hand, the employer should be (well, usually is) obligated to provide you with adequate means to do your job, so you don't have to pay in order to be able to work. I would not want to buy a computer for work. (But I do have my own, and that is *better* one than the employer's budget laptop.) On the other hand, yes, that indepence aspect, that's right. That is exactly the reason I always bought my own books (reference or textbooks) when I needed a book for work (when books were still a thing). This way I always had my books still with me when I changed jobs.

@jwelby@social.treehouse.systems @NanoRaptor@bitbang.social “I start talking rubbish like a garbage collector" reminds me of something... At the university, a friend and I worked on a small Lisp interpreter for an assignment, and at some point on the garbage collector. Doing GC on the symbol table, in which the symbols were kept in a more or less consecutive character space, proved tricky. I cannot remember if we also had a length field or a separator character or the like. Of course we needed to move symbol names to reclaim space, and there we blundered, causing garbled symbol names. We saw the "new" names and rolled our eyes, but we burst out laughing when we saw “lambdambda”.

RE: @peterpur@hci.social

Reminds me of Drew McDermott’s “Artificial intelligence meets natural stupidity.”

Well, just the title. It is over 30 years ago I read it, no way I remember anything *in* the article any more. But the title sure is snappy, and fits *so* well here.

RE: @coba@gruene.social

This is why I don’t want “AI” to be put in *any* kinds of processes in administration or management!

It looks like people might more likely wave through a stupid idea (that outwardly looks attractive and shiny) than come up with one themselves. Also, uncritical “AI" admiration and things.

@Larvitz@burningboard.net @WiseWoman@fediscience.org My own DB traveling needs are much simpler (Berlin-Hamburg, mainly), so much of this does not apply to me, but it does sound like sage advice. I always have a printed ticket with me (unless I forget it in the printer), usually some water, and I always book 1st class single seat. The battery of my noise-cancelling headphones usually lasts long enough, though. And *sometimes* the 1st-class waiter actually comes along and I can have a beer brought to me. I like that.

Da kommt schon was bei rum, sozusagen.

I can see the quoted "Google effect" (no longer keeping lots of details on one's head; although with other search engines in my case) in myself, and I am not totally happy with that. It is not that different from the past with online manuals at your fingertips, though.

But an LLM effect, by outsourcing cognitive tasks like writing to LLMs, where people cannot remember what they "wrote", and feel no ownership of their "writing", that is *really* bad.

Found out why my GitLab instance is so slow: Facebook has been scraping my repositories for 3 weeks now, apparently at the top of what GitLab could deliver on that small VM with just 2 CPUs and 1 thread each. And more, but all others are small fry in comparison.

Well, not any more. For now, no access any more except for a very few select addresses. I'll be thinking of something more measured shortly.

So long, and a happy Fuck You, Crawlers!

@JustaJason007 When we moved in together, we hired a small moving company, all part-timers (one a nursing student, one a taxi driver, one a restaurateur, and so on). The nursing student and the taxi driver looked at that chest and noticed it was empty, so they filled it with other stuff, and carried it without a hitch — not just the four flights down, but also four flights up at the destination. And proceeded with other stuff immediately. (2/2)

That reminds me... When my wife (to be) moved into her previous flat, two strong people, one a carpenter, the other a Tae Kwon Do champion, carried a big and really heavy oaken chest of hers four flights up. Impressive! They had to rest a bit afterwards, understandably. (1/2) @JustaJason007@beige.party @JustaJason007@beige.party

@MBEverding@mastodon.social @ocean@raru.re @catsalad@infosec.exchange In the flat I had as a student, my favourite place was the bed. In my favourite reading position, I had the head against a cushion on the wall. With a strategically placed small mirror on the opposite wall, I could see exactly the face of a clock — not a grandfather clock, but one that had belonged to my grandfather. I learned how to read a mirrored clock pretty fast.

And honestly, compared to a real, nice watch, a smartwatch looks shite. (As does the F-91.) Anyway, we have that choice. Either you want an attention-grabbing do-it-all device on your wrist, or you don't. If you don’t, there are better-looking choices available than the F-91, and ones that don't require you to correct the time, or exchange a battery. (3/3) @stefan

I don't wear a smartwatch because I love watches. Different watches. A smartwatch is jealous; it gives you its full love only if you wear it all the time, all day and night (for sleep tracking). Not only do I get pimples on my wrist when the skin doesn't get air during the night, but also I don't want that during the day. I want to wear the watch that fits my current mood, or the one that I just like most at that moment, or the right watch for an occasion. (2/3) @stefan

@chronovore Of course, if you are only interested in hiring a narrow-minded coding serf, such qualities will be wasted. Maybe the applicant dodged a bullet.

@chronovore It also shows that a person is interested in their profession beyond the immediate need. That can lead to wider range of knowledge and a broader perspective.
