Guy who bakes, snarks, writes, and codes.

One time Perl 6 pumpking, lo these many years ago, as well as core perl contributor and part-time VMS perl port maintainer. I have written the occasional article, mostly on perl. (but once upon a time long ago on the Amiga. Those were the days...)

Cute little bean avatar commissioned from @heyheymomo@socel.net

Currently not in France. Dammit. But retired, so that’s something.

RE: @vmbrasseur@social.vmbrasseur.com

“A lot of days we are using more wind,” Whitesides said. “There are no fuel costs there; it’s essentially free.”

This is what makes wind and solar so nice as power generation systems. It’s almost a one-and-done thing, unlike fossil fuel generation where you pay a massive amount to build a plant that… does nothing until you pay (continually) someone else for the inputs.

Just to be clear, I’m cool if you like your coworkers and find the social environment at your workplace pleasant. Just… it 100% should be optional. You should have healthy social options outside of work.

I mean, the problem is ultimately that we’ve killed all the healthy non-work social systems and maybe we should fix that rather than go back into the office.

Seeing another round of “it turns out that WFH has serious downsides because employees get all their social interaction at work and are getting unhealthy without that” and my first thought is “maybe we should fix that but where people are forced to rely on their jobs for social interaction” rather than “let’s go back to the office”

@mhoye@cosocial.ca this is apparently causing serious issues for their grid operators, mostly because their grid is poorly managed and mostly intended to enrich the grid owners rather than to deliver power. Terrible shame, really.

@ColesStreetPothole@weatherishappening.network damn right. I actually sorta miss living in Norwalk CT for this (and only this) since the town operated the grid and it was both cheaper and more reliable than the surrounding privately owned grid system.

RE: https://mastodon.social/@houstonpublicmedia/116998685471778121 Frankly at this point grid operators should guarantee residential rates and supply, and have large inbound customers bid for the remainder, along with them being the first cut when the grid is stressed. Want to open a datacenter? You’re first for the chop when the water or power supply is low, and you absorb the extra costs. If you don’t want this, then pony up the extra capacity as part of your hookup, and if you can’t then sucks to be you, go where there is capacity.

RE: https://fosstodon.org/@AkaSci/116993671723883053 Given how capital intensive satellite internet is, especially since the satellites have a very short and hard-imposed lifetime, how small the addressable market is, and how much competition for ISP services there is, I honestly don’t see how having multiple satellite internet companies is viable.

Can’t wait for the final checks and meter swap so I can actually export power, though what with Air Canada and all it’s not like I have that much excess generation yet. (Not that I ever will, it’s only a 10 panel setup because of stupid roof geometry)

And after fiddling with guest network settings I got this thing on, finally. I’m not sure if I’m happy that Enphase gadgetry doesn’t work with unencrypted WiFi or not. (In this case the solution was just a WPA, not a WPA/WPA2 network and I dunno why it cares. But whatever. Could be pure happenstance)

On the one hand it isn't the role of school districts to compensate for the bad decisions of Capitalism. On the other hand it's a one-time capital expense that provides value for decades just in electricity, not even counting the benefits in shade they get if they go the solar-car-parking. Frankly I could make an excellent case that any school district in an area with sufficient sun is doing themselves a disservice *not* installing solar as a long term budget win.

Oh, look, datacenters driving up the cost of power. This is one of those cases where I'd say the school district(s) and municipal governments should install some mass solar. Schools tend to have huge parking lots you can put solar shade over, and buildings with lots of flat space on their roofs, plus an in with the planning people. Bonus is you get incremental benefits -- you don't have to wait for everything to be installed and can turn things on as they go in. https://www.404media.co/henrico-virginia-datacenter-energy-cost-email/

Guy who bakes, snarks, writes, and codes. One time Perl 6 pumpking, lo these many years ago, as well as core perl contributor and part-time VMS perl port maintainer. I have written the occasional article, mostly on perl. (but once upon a time long ago on the Amiga. Those were the days...) Cute little bean avatar commissioned from https://socel.net/@heyheymomo Currently not in France. Dammit. But retired, so that’s something.

Pour one out for any kind of event driven control flow, functional programming paradigms, or pretty much anything else that's either fringe or we haven't really thought about yet. The bots don't know about it so it can't be developed.

I'm actually kinda impressed at how all the computer-y AI boosters are completely missing how switching over to sparkling autocomplete will basically kill programming language research and development dead.

Sparkling autocomplete can only produce variants of things in its trained matrix that pretty much by definition guarantees it can't make any use of new things. Like, say, developments in programming languages and their environments.

I go to the hardware store and buy one bulb of every socket type except for a single weirdo socket type that nobody, including me, ever uses. Then when a bulb goes out I'm guaranteed that it's that singular type I *didn't* buy and since I know where exactly the thing I didn't buy is I can run out and get it really easily.

@mhoye@cosocial.ca In the Before Times I occasionally advocated that we should see if we could rent a car on the red line of the T and use it as a mobile office, and make people work on it. If your app/web stuff works well in the spotty-connection RF insane environment that is the red line then it'd be really snappy for everyone else. Also companies should have dev offices on islands, well away from data centers. (Google Honolulu? Works for me, because google itself often doesn't there)
