On Wahpekute land in the Očhéthi Šakówiŋ territory.

It's long been my complaint that money/power doesn't land in the hands of intelligence. Until it's a cultural imperative that kindness is smart, that Paul Wellstone finally hits it home with his assertion that, "We all do better when we all do better," we will not all do better, which means humanity will remain weaker than it could be against the forces of nature. We are so busy competing with each other, we aren't surviving.

"Will the $10 Billion in Addiction Funding Cuts Roll Back Progress on Overdose Deaths?"

Yes.

https://youtube.com/shorts/DN4qHb7_i0Q?is=nf2DLvOBtW8tcmzD

The proposed Fiscal Year 2027 budget includes roughly 10 billion dollars in additional cuts to addiction-related programs. Republicans want us dead, but before that, they want us to be a consumer market. Selling guns to drug cartels, shoot-em-up good-guy-with-a-gun news, and footage of "evil brown communists" is extremely lucrative politicking.

On the subject of Lisa Cook's continued employment, yes, I also think monetary policy should remain independent from political influences.

Our approach to science should absolutely mimic that, including environmental science. This sudden partisan swing has done exponentially more monetary and economic damage to the US than a fickle Fed.

(I literally got paid for masking.) It feels like work/job, for free, without knowing if their interest or an opportunity is or will be there, under my burnout/depression conditions... so quadruple the perceived effort. @autismunicorn@autistics.life I don't have any trouble walking up to people (after being in the same space with them for more than a minute--too fast is creepy) and articulating in the form of a question something I noticed about them that they probably want noticed, something self-expressive vs. necessarily appearance-related. They put it out there on purpose, and I'm indicating it was safe with me to do that. The problem is when they recommend a follow-up thing I can do, I'm just not there. @autistics@fedigroups.social

@donni@mastodon.social It's, IMHO, a city of solidarity. When that's up, things are good. The last couple of mayors were policy wonks, and though a bunch of the local politics I've been following for 4 years really, really need that (too heated), Brandon Johnson and Gov. Pritzker have tapped a vibe like a gold vein. I think the threats from a common enemy helped a _lot_. I'm a little frustrated I can't seem to help iron in closer ties with Minneapolis where I am. So many reasons I'd like to see that.

Guys hop out of cars with a handgun after lunch & hold up an unsuspecting new iPhone users and then hop back in the car. There were 100 in 2024, 80-ish in 2025. Part of that "success" was license plate readers. Not all, but some. Gunpoint: ugly. Surveillance, ugly. Less gunpoint: good. Local & tossed surveillance: very good

I don't know anyone who doesn't turn the lights off and hide when dapper young men in white shirts & ties come a'-knockin', but you don't see Mormons hurting for funds. I've pushed the platform at at least 20 people in the last couple months without expectation. If you pressure too hard, they'll run. Exposure plus endorsement is as good as it gets, but you can't measure those results.

@dan@discuss.systems I went Tylenol-free for the '82 Chicago poisoning scare. I didn't have any at that point, so I just kept not buying it, partly because it was more expensive than ibuprofen, and Costco-sized jugs. Had an autistic kid in the aughts (now studying Molecular Engineering at UChicago). I learned today it wasn't commercially released until 1955, so no one over 70 apparently is actually autistic. I'm not sure who Hans Asperger was studying.

@micahflee Yeah, but that theater drew coders' attention to the ugliness of ICE, showed that someone who codes is both politically engaged and isn't that far-right (not so true 15 years ago, see gamergate), and stirred up mud so we know where in the swamp our boots will get stuck if we step there. In so many ways we're still in learning phase vs. effective phase. I'm gonna learn from the theater. But, you know, piss on the front steps if you must. I'll learn to walk around it.

@wolf480pl @dj3ei @mjd I've had to go back and document some really old code. it isn't that easily human-readable, otherwise I wouldn't have been hired to put in the double-slashes the coder didn't bother to do. I'm not making any suggestions. I know things are getting better. it just doesn't seem as though there's a consistent standard from where I sit... as a now non-active coder.

@mjd There needs to be a better way to document code. Half of the effort spent maintaining could be saved, not just with docs you can drill down on, but by getting coders focused on the human environment in which their code is supposed to work. It's this that a reviewer is for--to gatekeep the sloppy crap, that just happens to work, out.

I wonder what football pads smell like when you burn them. Probably a lot like Halloween costumes. We are all participating in this system of power, much of which is gender-based, while it's largely not working out for anyone. If saying that is seen as misandric, it drives my point even deeper.
