Pleased to meet Brick the Jumping Spider! I thought she was dying, that I had lain her to rest in the soil. But she revived and now sits underneath the succulent leaves. Named because I found her injured on the patio bricks, barely moving. She let me hand her a stick to climb, she grabbed it and moved onto it immediately but then remained motionless. I put her in this pot, something was moist on her head, so I thought the worst. But about an hour later she started moving around the pot, then came out and let me look her over. In fact she wasn't afraid of me at all, moving around and cleaning off whatever blood or whatever it was off her face. A leg injury maybe? I easily took a few pics as she cleaned and regained her strength. And wow the green mandibles are just stunning. #garden #spider #jumpingspider

@JessTheUnstill@infosec.exchange Someone at work - apparently trying to save time? - wrote a maintenance runbook with AI - I guess in the name of avoiding the toil of writing a one-liner script - and it was this complicated loop-based unreadable callback function that was difficult to troubleshoot because it obscured the error from the multiple commands within it. The best part, though, was that it assigned a single value to a list and iterated over the list to do the work - for a single value that would always be a single value, no human would ever have chosen to bother with code that iterates over a list of a single value. But here we are. Blindly running bullshit callback funcs that are now so plainly AI that I recognize it immediately.

My Monteverdi platform TUI view uses the tcell go library and it recognizes Ghostty with no problem, but today I discovered that mtr complains it doesn't recognize xterm-ghostty.

I see there's some consternation about Ghostty using its own terminfo and I feel like going ... well sonny, back in my day we had to echo terminfo into the amber 80x20 terminal CRT character by character with a lit match just to get BACKSPACE to work!

Anyway, yelling at cloud gets me nowhere. To get mtr to work I aliased it with an env var:

mtr: aliased to sudo TERM=xterm-256color mtr

But I agree with @mitchellh@hachyderm.io on that crazy issue thread. It's a terminal emulator and that's the whole fucking point of terminfo in the first place.

Struggling today. We have a neighbor who leaves his house at 5AM. He spends 15 minutes slamming his truck doors and leaving the driver side door open with the key in the ignition so it's constantly BEEP BEEP BEEPing and it's been ripping me out of my sleep in a way that I cannot get back to sleep. Not to mention the gas fumes through my open window that is open because we have no AC. This all happens directly under my bedroom window.

I don't know what to do. It's starting to really negatively affect my day in a bad way.

Roofing air compressor and related noise since before 7AM today. The new neighbor is having them put down black roofing tiles directly on top of the light gray ones. So not replacing any roofing, but adding onto the existing roofing. With the darkest most sun-absorbent color possible.

Just tested on most recent raspbian (debian on raspberry pi) linux and Copy Fail for sure fucks up 'su' pages in memory, but the command simply becomes unexecutable. It does not drop me to a root login because it cannot execute the 'su' command. Indeed the '/bin/su' file itself remains untouched.

Reboot and it gets cleared out of memory. But I think "every kernel since 2017" might not be exactly right. Definitely make sure you test this.

Week three and I'm touching prod. And it just feels normal and great and there are good SOP docs and I'm being guided and partnering with people.

Compare this to my toxic as fuck last job where they didn't let me do shit because everyone was jockeying for power but expected me to "read between the lines and pick it up" and it took three months to get me admin and NINE MONTHS before they'd allow me to go on-call. What a nightmare.

Grateful to be where I am now among smart people who care about each other. No signs of hero worship, although there are plenty of knowledge siloes that I'm already starting to break down.

@norootcause I'd say we do have the ability to focus on adaptation outside of incidents if we practice. When we practice together we are surfacing our regular work, the stuff we do that creates safety. That builds connections and pathways for adaptive capacity to become connected.

When I tested with low T at age 50, my doctor suggested I add some weights to my daily routine - on our scale of 1, I was at 0.01 This was the best advice for me because it led to the discovery of how good workouts lower my migraine activity. Coincidentally, I heard this story yesterday on LAist about Looksmaxing, a trend where men put their looks above anything else. "Soft looksmaxing" is like nutrition and diets and working out, but "hard looksmaxing" is when enhancements like steroids are used.

@mekkaokereke@hachyderm.io I'm confused, I didn't think anabolic steroids and testosterone therapy were the same chemical. I don't take either, but my father took T shots for many years to treat symptoms from prostate cancer. Lower testosterone is also associated with higher symptoms of migraines in men, which I can attest to reducing after changing to a daily workout that naturally raised my testosterone. My personal evidence is that raised T does not lead to being more aggressive; if anything, it has helped me treat CPTSD. So from a T perspective, I am in agreement. But I thought steroids acted on the body much differently than testosterone therapy. Are they different?

It's time to throw the line out again.

I have been working in SRE for 13 years. I am a specialist in Observability, Incident Management, and DevEx. I have also managed teams and been certified in observability, agile, and unix operating systems.

In June of 2025, I was suddenly laid off. I'm still jobless in my seventh month of trying to find work.

I'll be completely honest, I don't know why I can't find a role, I'm either over- or under-qualified, I either give too much detail or not enough, I don't tell it like a story or I tell it too much like it's a story.

The people I used to work with have been shocked when I tell them I can't find work. One of them even said:

"you have such a great mix of talents that I wish more engineers had, and I still cite you as an example of the type of people I want to work with"

If you know of any leads in the SRE, DevEx, DevOps, InfoSec, or anything of the sort, I'm still searching as hard as I can.
