All of this is predicated on knowing about how many tokens a particular task uses, which from what I've seen, the LLMs have deliberately made it nearly difficult to measure the tokens used by a particular session or project. This may change under pressure of business leaders now that they have suddenly become LLM cost-conscious.

Imagine two tasks that consume the same amount of LLM tokens, where the LLM cuts the time in half. Task A is tedious, takes 40 hours, and is "low value". Task B is interesting, invigorating, takes 8 hours, and is "high value". Both tasks will be completed on time.

Guidance would be to use LLM to complete Task B, but using the LLM on Task A would save more hours of work, work that is unenjoyable. The employee's mind would be fresher and able to do other work sooner.

Employees often don't know the value produced by their work. And that's often not just because of management is terrible at communicating priorities. For example, compliance work may not generate revenue today but will avoid consequences that may be hard to quantify. Another example is data exploration that might uncover a cost savings opportunity of unknown magnitude... or confirm existing processes are already efficient — how do you value that work before it starts?

Now that many LLMs (e.g. Github Copilot) have moved from flat prices to usage-based prices, businesses are reacting. As I'd expect, the guidance coming from senior business leaders is not brilliant. Instead, I'm seeing a lot of herding towards common, pithy, low-quality advice. One particularly common directive is to use AI for high-value projects instead of time-consuming or high-effort work. Today, I'm remembering that time on January 6, 2021 when Lindsey Graham indicated he might actually have a backbone by speaking out against the illegal coup attempt and said that Biden legitimately won the election.

I only bring it up as yet another example of how humans are bad at assessing risk. Explain to me why you didn’t pay this because I think you should have paid this.” And then maybe follow up with a formal request for an appeal if their response isn’t to immediately reverse. My general experience with this is most of the time, the insurance company suddenly found a reason to pay the small claims I was asking about.

I did know of family that inherited a 150 acre row crop land and buildings. Even adding top line machinery, it’d not even been 20% of the married couple estate tax threshold. The $15/30 MM limit exists for the massively wealthy owners that Taber describes, people who have assembled a portfolio of many such farms together.

@hgrsd I'm going to agree with you of course, but would add that those authors probably grew up in a world that wasn't ready to accept people just because it's the nice thing to do. I'm not even sure 2026 is ready just yet, but it's much improved over the 1980s. The kids my daughters go to school with are far kinder than they were when I was in school.

@me_valentijn @ai6yr The rate of subsidence in Lousiana is far worse than the Netherlands, and the storms from the Gulf of Mexico are worse than the North Sea. I suppose it is technically possible, but IMHO, it's spending a tremendous sum on a solution that has an expiration date, and I fear has a very high chance of failure with catastrophic results.

@ai6yr I watched a documentary circa 1995 where they talked about the vulnerability of New Orleans, lots of hand-wringing engineers, then they interviewed many residents who said they weren't worried in the least. Then Katrina. Then people insisting it was racist if we didn't rebuild New Orleans exactly as it was before Katrina, instead of relocating people. I just don't know.

@tantramar @angiebaby Yeah, I've seen AI apologists dismiss this as "everybody knows it's not good at counting", implying this is an unfair request striking at a narrow weak spot. Which I disagree. I think it's bad at nearly everything. The reason this type of task is used as an example so often is because it has an objectively correct answer and it's trivially easy for any human to verify the AI's answer is wrong.

Remember the dotcom boom pricing model? Sell it at a loss, expand the user base, for years with expectation that economy of scale will lead to profit.

The fact that they are converting to a usage-based pricing model so quickly tells you they are losing their ass on this!!!

Also, for those prior dotcoms, the costs didn't grow so fast by usage (heavily driven by R&D and marketing). #GenAI #LLMs have a voracious appetite for silicon, electricity, and cash!

The old rule of thumb is overnight is when you do elective stuff like charge your car, but I think you have it figured out. Totally logical with LNG and solar replacing coal, and given the war spiking prices on natural gas.

Mastodon / Fediverse has its own flaws, but practically speaking, it is more decentralized. I’m on one of the bigger instances, but if I didn’t like a policy, I could start a new username on a new instance, port my followers, and more or less continue on as-is.
