  Not a lot of people know this but when the location of Tracy Island was discovered by authorities it was immediately shut down for health and safety violations. All the Tracy sons died either from precipitous falls or getting body parts severed. The latest subject is batteries: Remember how the media seeded and constantly reinforced the lie that your EV’s battery would need to be expensively replaced after 2-3 years? Now that lie is untenable the only option is to splash the new story that they’re not wearing out. But notice the framing: Their part in the belief is absent. It’s just a huge surprise.

  Today I learned that there are only three English cities with an electrical consumption greater than 200 megawatts: London, Manchester and Birmingham. By comparison, the people who want to build AI data centres here, which nobody asked for, want a supply of up to 1 gigawatt (1,000 megawatts) for each one. That’s how skewed this whole nonsense is.

  Britain is currently running on an electricity generation mix that is over 90% renewables. The amount generated is in fact 112% of demand and the rest is being exported.   Yay! My new Premier Inn Mattress 2.0 is being delivered this morning, replacing the tired saggy thing I’ve been sleeping on for close to 40 years. I decided to keep my existing divan base as that seems to have weathered quite well (apart from the hardboard bottoms dropping out of a couple of the drawers). Ironically I slept for 9.5 hours last night on the old mattress so at least it’s going out in style.

  What happens when the sun doesn’t shine they cry… Well, we’re half way through the tenth day of the month after a week of dreary overcast skies and —so far— the very modest solar system on my roof has generated 128.5kWh. Some (the purple) went straight into the heat pump, washing clothes, cooking or into the battery to do those things later. The rest (53% or 68.1kWh in red) was sent out to the grid. I buy energy at 12.96p/kWh and I sell it back at 12p so even if I export now and buy it back…

  This afternoon, after lunch at Betty’s in Harrogate, I stopped off in Leeds to visit the only bookshop in England owned and run by a trans woman. The Bookish Type is a lovely shop and I’m delighted to tell you that I’ve personally signed all their copies of Trans Britain. If you want one get in quick because I’m sure they won’t be there for long!

  Ever since I got the heat pump in January, and over the month since the solar and battery were commissioned on 1st April, I’ve been collecting the data needed to accurately project how the combination will work over a full year. April was especially encouraging because, if payment for exports had been set up sooner, the month’s excess power generated would already exceeded the cost of the dwindling power I imported. Anyway… this morning I did a first full year forecast. See the next post…

As a criminal you’re much less likely to get killed by a train and everyone else is less likely to be inconvenienced.

  The operators of Britain’s National Grid think two new low carbon records have been beaten this week. Yesterday Solar power hit a new record for solar at 15.158 Gigawatts. The day before they say the low zero carbon content of electricity reached a new high of 98.8%. That’s on top of the new record for wind generation that was set on 25th March: 23.880 GW. These records keep getting beaten. The records are often momentary highs of 30 minutes but past records soon become commonplace standards.

  There’s a new breed of lamp post EV chargers springing up all over the streets of Manchester. These ones have a bit more “welly” about them (5kW output and more ways to pay) than the pioneering Ubitricity ones introduced elsewhere a few years ago. Ubitricity (taken over by Shell) supply only 3-4kW but I guess Manchester’s street light cabling has more capacity to spare since all the lights went over to LED. These units are fixed to the light pole’s access hatch so require less work to install.

  The fact that the Good Law Project won their legal challenge against the trans guidance the EHRC tried so hard to ram down the country’s throat hasn’t been reported widely. So here is GLP’s own message to supporters. Remembering that the EHRC is still captured by GCs their forced rework may still be a dog’s breakfast. In my view the Commission should be disbanded and rebuilt afresh from the ground up. It’s the only way to disinfect an ideologically captured body. The fight’s certainly not over.

  The first half of April has been a pretty good one for renewable and low carbon energy on the UK mainland’s power grid. April’s national energy consumption to date is about 10 TWh (pretty well half of what’s expected for the full month) but it’s the breakdown that warms the heart: Wind: 3.2TWh Solar: 1.0 TWh Nuclear: 1.7 TWh Imports: 1.0 TWh And then: Gas: 2.0 TWh Greenwashed wood pellet burning: 0.9 TWh

  Metaphorical champagne corks popping here this morning as I can confirm that (for the first time) my house ran for a full 24 hours without consuming any grid power. The battery started supporting the house loads from about 7pm last night as solar power fell away, it ran the heat pump and fridge through the night and was down to 13% capacity at 7.30am as solar power started trickling back. It is already now charging at 1.3kW from rapidly increasing solar power and should be full again by 11-12.00
