There’s a new breed of lamp post EV chargers springing up all over the streets of Manchester. These ones have a bit more “welly” about them (5kW output and more ways to pay) than the pioneering Ubitricity ones introduced elsewhere a few years ago. Ubitricity (taken over by Shell) supply only 3-4kW but I guess Manchester’s street light cabling has more capacity to spare since all the lights went over to LED. These units are fixed to the light pole’s access hatch so require less work to install.

The AMEY chargers here in Manchester are somewhat bulkier than the Ubitricity ones. Here are a couple of installations of the latter which I snapped near Liverpool back in 2019. Although quite neat (especially on slimline light poles) the lack of room for other parts such as an RFID reader mean the Ubitricity chargers rely on scanning a QR code to set up the charge on a web page. The AMEY chargers offer contactless credit card, roaming card (eg Electroverse) and app-based pay options.

@christineburns@mastodon.green Ooh, very cool! On a rare occasion in the States, there is an outlet on the base of a lamppost in a hotel parking lot. I’d love to see some of these chargers in the US, but not gonna happen for awhile, I fear

@christineburns@mastodon.green Checking them out with the Electroverse app, Amey charging points seem to be 5-7kW. I don’t know if the 7kW ones are light poles.

@christineburns@mastodon.green 5KW looks like a useful output. It is enough to give a 20%–80% charge on a typical long-range 80KW battery in 10 hours.
