@Will Tuladhar-Douglas Lidl...? Sucks. Not because of your story, but by what it is, just another stupidly average large supermaket chain.

@yetiinabox You can also have a look-see whether you can trade "Bezahlkarten" for real money. In Munich, there's https://offen-muenchen.de/gutschein-stellen/, and this is for hamburg: https://www.bezahlkarte-nein.de/

@yetiinabox Hmm, I've never considered tomatoes a fruit, but rather a vegetable... But everything else about your post makes my day a little brighter! Thanks for sharing.

@yetiinabox That's a lovely story, and I'd like to add a similar impactful event for me. My parents owned a small factory in the Finch/Dufferin area of Toronto - and when I was almost out of high school in the late 70s there was a HUGE Knob Hill Farms grocery store that opened. That neighborhood had lots of immigrants (we emigrated to Canada in the early 60s) and every few weeks you would see people breaking down crying in the fresh food section. Ok day I asked if they were ok and a family member said - they are fine. This is my uncle from Poland, and they have never seen so MUCH food. So yeah - be kind - it's the very least we can do. If you think life is hard here it's still pretty good most of the time. It's all relative.

@yetiinabox@todon.nl whenever someone says they are from somewhere else, I also make a conscious effort to say "well I am glad you are here!" I have also noticed that once you get people from other parts of the world talking, they are generally better socialized than Americans. Wonder why that is?

@yetiinabox Last Summer a group of refugees arrived to a small town near me and the press started publishing stuff about a "social emergency" and "new dangers", pretty nasty. Most of them were teens or very young adults, no connections, didn't know a single word in our language. Neighbours organized a welcoming party for them with live music, they taught them our traditional dance, they tried local food and exchanged words in different languages. They weren't strangers anymore.

@yetiinabox I was worried how this started out, but loved the ending. Thank you for being human and welcoming to people in need. With all the Flag-fanciers, it must be really hard for them and other refugees/home-seekers. I'm glad they got to meet at least one decent local who didn't want to attack them for stupid and misguided reasons.

@yetiinabox I admire you double. For what you did, and for correctly identifying tomato as #fruit.
