When the marketing says "SAVE [tiny print] UP TO [/tiny print] $4,000!" I just assume that whatever it is, I can't afford it and move on. Doubly so if I wouldn't even pay $4,000 for whatever it is they're pushing.

An update to my spam filters to kill the latest wave of particularly irritating spam killed 55 messages over the past week, with three false positives. All of the false positives were from the SpamAssassin mailing list that was discussing how to kill this particular form of spam, which I found amusing. I've adjusted the rule to compensate for that particular quirk.

Looking at two e-books I'd like to buy. Both with DRM. Nope, sorry, I don't want a "revocable license to read on a surveillance device," I want a fucking copy of the e-book that I can read with the application of my choice, in the OS of my choice. NO SALE.

I just shake my head when the US media describes Yet another mass shooting, especially one of the "dude can't handle rejection, kills family then himself" variant as "shocking" How can something that happens [looks it up] about ONCE A DAY be shocking? Horrific I get, yes. But shocking? Give me a break. I'll tell you what's fucking shocking: that there's no way for anyone to do anything about it because of shitty politics. That...

Man if you have a new book/essay/post on anything AI related and capitalize it as "Ai", I am so not reading your work, on the assumption that it's a poorly edited piece of crap.

A local butter company is running into a legislative barrier. There's a two-tier system in Ontario. Small producers can sell direct to consumers, but not through retail or wholesale channels. the next step up requires a full industrial facility costing millions of dollars, and is only suited to large volume operations. The Lofty Butter Company (https://loftybutter.ca/) is within 100km of me, makes wonderful butter, but if I want some, I have to drive for the better part of an hour round...

I have to say that what I love about this platform, and what is a strong echo of the Internet I first came to love, is that when you post something here that others take issue with, most of the time what you get in response is well-reasoned replies and counterarguments, instead of a stream of rage-farming crap. Thank-you, Mastodon.

I just discovered that some time ago my newsletter mail provider added a step to the sign-up process without letting me know, which means that sign-ups were silently failing. Gutted that this has possibly cost me between zero and zero new subscribers! At the same time they updated their API, which lets me bypass the issue, but now I'm logging successes as well as failures, just in case they "update" things without notice again.

There's something special about having my weather app say that today will be "much warmer" than yesterday, while there's still an extreme cold weather warning across the header. Maybe "today will be less extreme" would be better...
