Struggling to resize windows on macOS Tahoe? Here’s why. https://noheger.at/blog/2026/01/11/the-struggle-of-resizing-windows-on-macos-tahoe/

@noheger@wien.rocks Yes! All the time. The opposite also occurs: trying to click something behind a window and accidentally resizing the front most window instead.

@noheger@wien.rocks And you have to change your muscle memory when you want to resize apps that have not been updated for Tahoe as well (and I guess those other windows which have smaller radii, like those without toolbars).

@noheger@wien.rocks Remember when Mac windows had a nice large “resize handle” in that corner? It served as both a visual indicator, and an easy hit target. Looks like Apple brought it back on the iPad. They should probably bring it back on the Mac as well.

@noheger@wien.rocks Things like this make me want to switch to Linux and build my own Desktop environment and window manager. Like, gather all the macOS devs who still understand how desktop UX is supposed to work, take an Apple HIG from the 90s or so and let‘s build ourselves a new home. And when we are done with that (shouldn’t take longer than a couple decades, right?), we fork the open source component from Android and do the same for mobile UX.

@noheger@wien.rocks @siracusa@mastodon.social Yes it’s horrible. They copied this “feature” from Windows which has had it for years. So bad.

@noheger@wien.rocks Great, users can't find a window corner because Apple design leadership could not find their ass with both hands.

@noheger@wien.rocks Like Space Invaders, you shouldn't aim where your target is, but where it would be.

@noheger@wien.rocks That was worse than I expected. Apple could dramatically improve UX by migrating to unmodified KDE. And supporting KDE devs going forward.

@noheger@wien.rocks In fairness, this problem only affects five of the five different corner radii used in Tahoe.

@noheger@wien.rocks Microsoft did this sort of thing with Windows 11 as well (apparently done via some sort of weird DWM hack to round the window corners, without actually changing how the touch targets are located). Though for whatever reason, the mouse targets are smaller on the top corners of the window than on the bottom, even though it technically shouldn't matter.

@noheger@wien.rocks @siracusa@mastodon.social Also, the cursor changing to the drag arrows can be inconsistent. Sometimes, it just does not change until I move it away and back again. The swap between normal and drag is important. It should be instant and happen always. But... nope. Drives me nuts.

@noheger@wien.rocks I've given up trying to resize using the corner, I now resize using the sides. It sometimes takes longer but not as long as missing the corner repeatedly.

@noheger@wien.rocks The XFCE desktop has a really nice take on resizing windows. Alt+Right-mouse-click somewhere in quite a large area near any corner of a window does the same as trying to find the much smaller window resize area in any corner. I find this very useful as my patience and hand-eye coordination deteriorate (generally and by varying degrees on given days) as I get older. Maybe other desktops have similar systems.
