[🚨 #MediaWiki vulnerable extension]

If you are running a MediaWiki instance with Extension:External_Data < v3.7, your instance is vulnerable to arbitrary file loading and #RemoteCodeExecution.

The vulnerability was apparently publicly known since August, but due to the lack of communication, instance admins learned about it due to that vulnerability being exploited en masse.

If you know and like a MediaWiki instance, you can check their Special:Version page to see if they are using the External_Data extension to warn them.

Started out as another sleepy day without energy and a terrible frozen pizza for lunch. But then

  • did a small #DIY thing (treating a quite freshly drywall corner with sandpaper, which also turned out to require a bit of filling)
  • cleaned the bathroom (since I had to shower afterwards anyway)
  • did some coding for #WikiTreeBEE in the drying break (Belgian categories in #WikiTree from #Wikipedia/ #Wikidata)

For knowledge to genuinely be open the owners of that knowledge must want it to be. There is much work to be done by open communities to reconcile the goals of free and open knowledge with respect for Indigenous content and honouring self-determination.
