Short on time and locations this morning after a week resting my achilles from workouts and just easy running. It was back to where my #running journey started doing couch25k round my local park, but this time for a Mona fartlek (2x90s, 4x60s, 4x30s, 4x15s). Happy with the paces and didn't get chased by any of the dogs also trying to beat the lastest #UKHeatwave I now get to trap and transport 2 cats for their annual vaccinations. #TrackTuesday #RunnersOfMastodon

Absolute carnage in Tesco this morning, most of the chiller cabinets seem to have failed in the heat so they're selling off everything they can half price. I just popped in to grab something for lunch but ended up grabbing a lot of discounted fresh produce and deli bits. I won this morning but in the long term we're all going to be the losers. #UKHeatwave #ClimateDiary #FoodSecurity

I am not suggesting it is hot outside, but on my way into town, some Jawas tried to sell me a protocol droid that speaks bocce and an astromech that looks might it have a faulty motivator. Made a big mistake at the supermarket joining a queue behind some sand people. Nice crowd, but took ages to pay as the queue was so much longer than expected. They sure do know how to hide their numbers. #ukheatwave #starwars

Heat deaths are a public health crisis rooted in housing inequality "Heat deaths are not scattered randomly across the population. They fall predictably and measurably on particular people in particular homes. Around 60% of the estimated deaths in May and June were among people aged over 85. But age is only part of the story, because vulnerability to heat is socially patterned.... ...An analysis by the Resolution Foundation thinktank found that 54% of the poorest fifth of English households live in homes at high risk of overheating, against 18% of the richest fifth. #GreenParty MP #HannahSpencer to introduce bill on maximum workplace temperatures. "Campaigners and unions have criticised the fact the UK has health and safety guidance on minimum workplace temperatures but nothing for maximums, despite rising summer heat caused by the climate crisis. Unison and the Trade Union Congress have called for a maximum indoor work temperature of 30C, or 27C for strenuous work." PSA for the #gardening #allotment #GrowYourOwn folks: this sounds ridiculous but is 100% true I promise. If your courgettes, zucchini or summer squash taste bitter, don't eat them. In hot dry conditions squash produce a toxic defensive compound called cucurbitacin E, which can cause vomiting and diarrhea. If you keep eating them it can cause something called toxic squash syndrome (again I promise this isn't a joke) which can make your hair fall out. And this has been a very hot dry summer. Prompted by a friend of mine sharing that his courgettes were minging this year so he covered them in cheese and ate them anyway. Don't do that. #UKHeatwave

For the benefit of those living in warmer climates, when we complain about #ukheatwave we're not trying to imply that our island's weather is hotter than yours. 🙄 We live on a damp island surrounded by water. So when it gets hot with high humidity, the heat hits different and our infrastructure doesn't really cope with it well. Nine months out of the year our weather is grey skies and drizzly rain. Our winters have freezing temperatures so our houses/flats have 2+ layers of brickwork/insulation & double-glazed windows that open outwards to save on heating bills. Most homes don't have ceiling fans or air conditioning because it's rarely hot enough to justify the expense. So when a heat dome descends on us due to global warming, and it goes on for more than a couple of days, our homes turn into ovens and we find ourselves living in Satan's sweaty butt crack. The only escapes are our cars (if they're parked in the shade), air conditioned supermarkets, and poo-filled waterways.

Oh this is horrible. The dining room just hit 31 degrees with the curtains drawn. All the advice in the world is wrong. Cold is a distant memory. I live in the Wicker Man and need airlifting back to Dublin. #ukheatwave
