Saturday Dinner Prep and Tunes – 20 June 2026

Joni Mitchell – Ladies on the Canyon Lately I have been listening to Joni Mitchell. She’s an artist I knew about but had not really listened to her. Tori Amos has a lot to thank Joni for. I picked this up at the record fair earlier in the day for $25 which was quite cheep really. I love Joni’s art work for this album cover. There is a fantastic chapter on Joni Mitchell in the book by Claire Dederer Monsters. She talks about male artists often privileged to peruse their art while women take care of the house and children and this is not seen as taboo, yet there is a taboo for mothers to peruse their art – in Joni’s case this is more extreme but I still think about that chapter often. #nowplaying #nowspinning #vinyl #records #music #JoniMitchell

SCREAMING TREES Even If And Especially When 2024 U.S. reissue Their second album overall, but their FIRST for SST Records. If all you know is the latter day Screaming Trees albums from the #90s (Sweet Oblivion, Dust), then hearing the SST material comes as quite a shock. This is a far more raw and PSYCHEDELIC brand of Trees. It’s rough, garage-y, a bit unrefined, and legendary frontman Mark Lanegan’s signature deep and weathered vocal is not there yet. It was THESE kinds of records that made them well-known heroes in the underground. The band went through their paces for years honing their craft, and when “Seattle/Grunge Mania” happened six years later, they already had FIVE records under their belt. This album’s opener “Transfiguration” is one of my all time favorite Trees tunes. It’s so gnarly and in your face. PHOTOGENIX Photogenix 1983 Canada 12” E.P. @ #45rpm First spin from the pile of today’s finds goes to the shortest one. A great little 4-song #newwave #postpunk -y from Montreal’s Photogenix. This appears to be the band’s only official release. A self-produced E.P. Apparently, at the time, Montreal’s pop scene was overrun with major-label economics. So this recording garnered some attention for being so independent and sounding SO good. #NowPlaying Johari Salleh, Jazz Dari Angkasapuri (Audible Beauty Records, 2026) Salleh is a Malaysian trumpet player, composer and arranger known primarily for popular television and film music, but apparently he was straight ahead jazz guy at heart, and this incredible record—comprised of tunes recorded in ‘74—proves that. This officially drops this Friday (which happens to be a #BandCampFriday) but my vinyl preorder showed up early and I haven’t stopped listening since it landed. RAY LYNCH Deep Breakfast 1984 U.S. pressing A perfect late night spin, and one of my three favorite #ambient / #newage records ever. I first heard this WAAAY back in the mid 90s. I was visiting my best friend’s house for the first time, and upon entering his house, I saw a giant pile of CDs on a side table. “These yours?”, I asked him. “Nah, man. Those are my Dad’s.” I noticed most of it. A lot of classic rock, some folk stuff, Simon and Garfunkel…etc. Then I saw THIS in there. I had never heard of Ray Lynch before, so I was intrigued. “Dude, what’s this about?” “I don’t know man. Let’s throw it on.” I was hooked from the very first track “Celestial Soda Pop”, which apparently, early #80s NPR used as a theme song for one of their shows back then. Just a beautiful album. It’s that time of year where I have to starting culling down some of my music library; whether it be vinyl, CDs, or anything else. Now that this awful summer flu I had seems to be gone, I can start. And everything starts in the basement. I’m going to start with the CDs first because believe me, it’s going to be the easiest. All of the CDs that were down there have now been brought upstairs, and added to what’s already been up here. These represent the NON-boxset discs, and have (with the exception of about 30 CDs) all been alphabetized to make this process easier. I notice right away that there are doubles of a few things, as well as some things I no longer have a need to own. THE REZILLOS Can't Stand The Rezillos 2023 Australia reissue An absolute classic from the first wave of British #punk ! It’s fast, energetic, has lots of poppy hooks, and a lot more fun than some of the super-serious political punk that came from the same time. There’s a fistful of legitimate classics on this, from “Top Of The Pops”, “Flying Saucer Attack”, “I Can’t Stand My Baby”, and a few really high-octane cover tunes that absolutely slay. SHANGHAI DOG This Evolution 1985 Canada pressing For fans of independent Canadian rock from the #80s , this is a bit of a sought after record. I found it in a thrift store in Chilliwack about a decade ago. A killer #postpunk #newwave rock record, it’s got a political tone to it, as well as dealing with themes of social unrest and alienation, like any good #punk record should. The bass lines on this album are killer! Those come courtesy of the great Ron Allan, who along with guitarist Mike Graham, were members of the legendary Vancouver band Subhumans. This is the only record ever released by Shanghai Dog. MODEST MOUSE Good News For People Who Love Bad News 2011 U.S. 2xLP reissue Such a great album that I revisit SEVERAL times a year. I have a LOT of memories, both good AND bad, attached to this record. Major life events were scored by these songs over the course of three years, and even the bad ones are looked upon now with a sense of warmth and a little bit of resolve. I’m not what you would call a diehard Modest Mouse fan. I like a handful of songs scattered over some of their albums, but in all honesty, this is the only record of theirs I’ll ever need or have any real emotional connection to. THE WAR ON DRUGS Slave Ambient 2011 U.S. 2xLP @ #45rpm A band I’ve always liked, but I’m still waiting on them to make an album as good as this one from front to back. Lost In The Dream came close, but there’s some clips or songs on that one, whereas this is pretty much a perfect record start to finish. “Come To The City” is such a good tune, as is “Baby Missiles”, which is one my band and I have tacked on to the end of our sets when our originals have been exhausted, and we need to stretch it out for a few extra minutes. Really great record from a very good band.
