One of the most ambitious Amazonian projects involved Daniel Ludwig, then one of the world’s wealthiest men, who constructed an entire pulp factory in Japan, transported it across the ocean on a floating barge, and docked it in Laranjal do Jari in Amapá. The decades-long project, which began in the 1960s and cost more than $1bn, ended in failure. Much of the factory remains.

An illuminating read. Enjoyed the early chapters about the post-punk and Factory days more than the later ones. I cannot share Spinoza's apparent enthusiasm for the proliferation of tower blocks in the city I live in, although I do not have a rosy-tinted view of the past either. He does sound a note of caution, especially in the last chapter, and may not be free to express his true views given his PR role.
