SCREAMING TREES Even If And Especially When 2024 U.S. reissue Their second album overall, but their FIRST for SST Records. If all you know is the latter day Screaming Trees albums from the #90s (Sweet Oblivion, Dust), then hearing the SST material comes as quite a shock. This is a far more raw and PSYCHEDELIC brand of Trees. It’s rough, garage-y, a bit unrefined, and legendary frontman Mark Lanegan’s signature deep and weathered vocal is not there yet. It was THESE kinds of records that made them well-known heroes in the underground. The band went through their paces for years honing their craft, and when “Seattle/Grunge Mania” happened six years later, they already had FIVE records under their belt. This album’s opener “Transfiguration” is one of my all time favorite Trees tunes. It’s so gnarly and in your face. It’s that time of year where I have to starting culling down some of my music library; whether it be vinyl, CDs, or anything else. Now that this awful summer flu I had seems to be gone, I can start. And everything starts in the basement. I’m going to start with the CDs first because believe me, it’s going to be the easiest. All of the CDs that were down there have now been brought upstairs, and added to what’s already been up here. These represent the NON-boxset discs, and have (with the exception of about 30 CDs) all been alphabetized to make this process easier. I notice right away that there are doubles of a few things, as well as some things I no longer have a need to own. MODEST MOUSE Good News For People Who Love Bad News 2011 U.S. 2xLP reissue Such a great album that I revisit SEVERAL times a year. I have a LOT of memories, both good AND bad, attached to this record. Major life events were scored by these songs over the course of three years, and even the bad ones are looked upon now with a sense of warmth and a little bit of resolve. I’m not what you would call a diehard Modest Mouse fan. I like a handful of songs scattered over some of their albums, but in all honesty, this is the only record of theirs I’ll ever need or have any real emotional connection to. VARIOUS ARTISTS No New York 1978 U.S. pressing The crown jewel of today’s finds from downtown; a PRISTINE original upgrade copy from my unlistenable beat-to-shit one, and one of the most influential compilations ever. The NYC “no wave” scene didn’t last long, but Brian Eno was ALL about it, after witnessing some of the bands at an art space in Manhattan. Eno wanted to record these very out of the box bands for posterity, and opted to do it in a very “live” off-the-cuff manner. 4 bands contributing 4 songs each, it is a pivotal document of what was happening in the late-70s NYC underground. The Contortions (more on them later), Teenage Jesus And The Jerks, Mars, and D.N.A.; all envelope pushers in the best sense of the phrase. DEFTONES Around The Fur 2011 U.S. reissue More Deftones! I remember how excited I was when this came out in ‘97. I had just spent a year and a half obsessing over Adrenaline, and was really hoping that Around The Fur would be just as good. Was it ever. Not only was it good, it was superior in EVERY way, and took a huge creative leap forward. It is somehow HEAVIER, but also super atmospheric and dreamy. It’s more melodic, the guitars are down-tuned and absolutely pummeling, and Chino’s lyrics and voice are emotional and soaring. This is their first GREAT record, and it would only get better from here, because White Pony was on the horizon. I still feel like The Deftones are underrated. They’re huge, and people love em, but I feel it’s not enough. THE MUPPETS The Muppet Movie (Original Soundtrack Recording) 1979 Canada pressing The Muppets were a pivotal part of my childhood. From The Muppet Show to the subsequent movies, those characters and songs are tattooed on my heart and soul forever. Until today, it was the only soundtrack of the initial run of movies (Movie, Caper, Manhattan, Christmas Carol) that I didn’t own on vinyl. Regardless of how you feel about The Muppets, this is worth owning solely for Paul Williams’ “Rainbow Connection”, just a stunningly beautiful song regardless of how old you are. An even bigger bonus is that this was a used copy that STILL had the movie poster inside of it. They’re almost always missing. DEFTONES Adrenaline 2022 U.S. reissue From the beginning, I never understood why they got lumped in either all of those inferior shithead “nu metal” bands. For starters, they were first out the gate, and were around before any of those asshole bands reared their very ugly heads (and music). Musically, DEFTONES were always far more interesting and dynamic band. Amongst all those pummeling guitars and pounding drums was always an incredible sense of melody and songcraft. I was a fan of them right from the start. As a junior in high school, I was instantly obsessed with Adrenaline. Their very first record, it’s far from their best. It is however, one of my two favorites. Chino is an incredible front man, and as a live act, they’ve always been just MAMMOTH. My love for this band will never waiver. JACK MUDURIAN Downloading The Repertoire 1996 U.S. CD issue Truly one of the batshit craziest discoveries I’ve had in a long while. Recorded in the Summer of 1981, Jack Mudurian was an older man who lived at the Duplex Nursing Home in #boston Ma. He claimed to have a repertoire of 'almost as many songs as Sinatra'. So, someone recorded him with a cassette recorder on the Duplex porch… UNINTERRUPTED. Seriously. UNINTERRUPTED. For 47 minutes straight, Jack unleashes a truly bizarre stream-of-consciousness hellfire. It sounds like an unmedicated retiree having the world’s greatest stroke. It’s incredible. It’s crazy listening to this craziness, with no breaths, & see the numbers on the track counter advance, with no real line of delineation. Birds are singing, other elders are heard singing in the background… It’s insane. KING CRIMSON Frame By Frame (The Essential King Crimson) 1991 U.S. 4xCD Box Set The last of the really cool CD acquisitions from yesterday, and it was so reasonably priced, I couldn’t leave without it. A pretty comprehensive oral history of King Crimson; 3 discs of compiled album tracks from every period, with a 4th disc of live recordings the same. The book is SUPER COOL, but for me, it takes a backseat to the awesome (and complete) King Crimson family tree, drawn by Hideyo Itoh. That alone is a cool art piece and suitable for framing. I love EVERY era and EVERY iteration and lineup of King Crimson, but this morning, I’m starting with the ‘81-84 Disc #3 (the “Discipline” era), a run only touched by the original ‘69-71 run. JAWBREAKER Etc. 2022 U.S. Ltd. Edition reissue If the R.E.M. collection Dead Letter Office that I posted is my favorite b-sides & rarities album ever, THIS would be a very close second. On this Masto, I’m on record many times in saying that #jawbreaker is one of the three or so most beloved bands of my lifetime. They have enriched my life in so many ways that it’s hard to imagine. THIS collection gathers all the split 7” songs they did with other bands, stray B’s, cover songs, and alternate recordings throughout their existence. Perfect way to start off a Monday morning and head into a new week. A quick note: I’ve always preferred the Dear You-era recording of “Boxcar” that appears here (as well as on the expanded edition of Dear You). It’s got way more muscle, and just sounds waaay better. R.E.M. Dead Letter Office 1987 U.S. pressing R.E.M.’s collegiate/I.R.S. un from ground zero up until they signed with Warner is without question my favorite period of any band’s existence ever. Those six years were as fruitful and as groundbreaking as any band’s period in history. Originals of those early records are not that hard to find on vinyl, but for some reason, it was very hard for me to procure an original Dead Letter Office. I’d never seen one around where I live now, and it took me going back to Boston to visit about a month ago to finally get one. This is my favorite b-sides and rarities album ever; collecting all of the stray tracks up until Life’s Rich Pageant. This morning, I woke up to the sound of a lot of commotion and human traffic on my street. I groggily looked out my bedroom window and saw about 40 cars parked on my street. Upon closer look, I saw a tent on the front lawn of the houseacross the street, and loads of people walking around with various items. ESTATE SALE! And barely had to get dressed. As far as records and CDs go, it was miles and miles and miles of utter dog shit. BUT… I found THIS. A really nice Sony PS-LX3 Direct Drive turntable, in perfect working order. They wanted only 50 bucks for it, but I talked them down to 30. Now THATS a hell of a find. Got it all hooked up, and it sounds great! So now I’ve got TWO really great sounding direct drive machines in the study. TEST DEPT. The Unacceptable Face Of Freedom 1986 UK reissue Some noisy industrial badassery gets last spin of the night. I cannot for the life of me remember when or how I first learned of Test Dept.. I had a friend in high school hook who was SUPER into 80s and 90s industrial, so I think he probably made me a mixtape that had all that stuff on it, like the Wax Trax! stuff, Ministry, etc. This is the sound of scrap metal, oil drums, sheet steel, and salvaged industrial machinery. And politics. THE STRANGLERS Black And White 1980 Canada reissue A little kick in the ass for last spin of the night. The third Stranglers record, and the first where they started trying different things. Here, they fuck around with odd time signatures and stretch themselves out a bit. “Nice ‘n’ Sleazy” is an absolute scorcher, and “Tank”, “Outside Tokyo” and “Curfew” are highlights as well. The U.S. version was released on A&M, and I’ve been looking for one of THOSE for a long while, as they were grey marbled vinyl, but it continues to elude me. Also, the first 75,000 copies had a 7” included as well. Anybody out there have THAT one? It’s got 3 extra songs on it, one of which being a Burt Bacharach-penned Dionne Warwick cover. GETO BOYS We Can't Be Stopped 2026 U.S. 2xLP reissue Thirteen year old me is very pleased! I had no idea that they had reissued this. I was at the mall with my son and saw it inside of a “record store” there (it’s actually a toy and t-shirt store more than anything else), and had to get it. This was one of the first two rap tapes that I bought with my own money as a kid (the other being Public Enemy’s Apocalypse ‘91), and I have a great sentimental value attached to it, AND Geto Boys in general. “Mind Playing Tricks On Me” is an all-time jam. That funky little guitar lick in it brings back such vivid memories. “The Other Level” is just as great. This needed to be part of my vinyl library.
