Sunday Coffee and Tunes - 20 September 2026 Alice Coltrane - Journey in Satchidananda Last night we watched the Criterion edition of Akira Kurosawa’s 1990 film Dreams. My partner, being an avid Kurosawa fan, introduced me to his work when we were dating. I remember watching this film years ago but my memory was patchy (like a dream eh). Kurosawa doesn’t hold back – I’ll make the most beautiful scene of flowers and a rainbow with a little boy needing to gut his stomach for the fox spirits to make amends for childhood curiosity. The peach orchard scene is one of the most stunning pieces of cinema. Harrowing PTSD war flashbacks /survivor guilt and the final scene about humanity, capitalism and nature are as relevant today as it was then. I woke up this morning still thinking about the film. So I put this on, which seemed perfectly fitting following Dreams, with it’s own themes of loss, transcendence and overall hazy vibe. This is one of my favourite weekend morning coffee records. #nowplaying #nowspinning #vinyl #records #Music #AliceColtrane #AkiraKurosawa

Magyar Posse - Random Avenger Repeat with subtle crescendo until it all bursts in flames. This under-the-radar gem got it's well overdue vinyl release this year (20 years after its initial release). Many great records have been released this year, but I have a strong feeling this will be my most listened LP at the end of the year. Hopefully we get "We will carry you over the mountains" -vinyl some day in the future. #magyarposse #randomavenger #vinyl #nowspinning #postrock

Joni Mitchell – Ladies on the Canyon Lately I have been listening to Joni Mitchell. She’s an artist I knew about but had not really listened to her. Tori Amos has a lot to thank Joni for. I picked this up at the record fair earlier in the day for $25 which was quite cheep really. I love Joni’s art work for this album cover. There is a fantastic chapter on Joni Mitchell in the book by Claire Dederer Monsters. She talks about male artists often privileged to peruse their art while women take care of the house and children and this is not seen as taboo, yet there is a taboo for mothers to peruse their art – in Joni’s case this is more extreme but I still think about that chapter often. #nowplaying #nowspinning #vinyl #records #music #JoniMitchell

Released today 46 years ago: 🇬🇧 Joy Division "Closer" – 1980 Released just two months after Ian Curtis’ death, Closer stands as JDs final studio album and one of the most profound statements in post-punk history. The album explores themes of isolation, mortality, faith, and human vulnerability with extraordinary emotional depth, creating music that is both intimate and monumental. #joydivision #postpunk #alternativerock #vinyl #music #vinylrecords #nowspinningonvinyl #nowspinning #nowlistening

Released today 43 years ago: 🇬🇧 Bauhaus "Burning from the Inside" – 1983 With Murphy absent from parts of the recording due to illness, Ash, David J, and Haskins take on expanded creative roles, giving the album a distinctive character and a broader musical palette. The result is a collection that balances dark intensity with moments of surprising warmth and experimentation... #bauhaus #gothicrock #postpunk #artrock #alternativerock #vinyl #music #nowspinningonvinyl #nowspinning #nowlistening

Swear I'm not making this up. Red is out of the house so time to crank some music she's meh on. Couldn't decide what to play so I opened the Discogs app and gave a shake on my collection to get a random suggestion. No word of a lie, it returned The Saints' Eternally Yours. This record was a gift from J, that first batch of duplicates he sent me. This is the one he was most excited to turn me on to--horn section on the first track, and I love me a horn section. And indeed this record slaps. I’m gonna listen to the rest of ‘em next. I love you, man. I wish you were still here so I could tell you. #NowSpinning #vinyl #RecordCollection #SpaceAce

This is a weird one for me cause of my Boston rock past, and never was a band I listened to much. But J was a fan and got an extra copy of this so now I have a copy. And in my wizened years it’s a fun listen. Band is tight. Drummer is S Tier. @SpaceAce #vinyl #NowSpinning #vinylcollection
