I have had to remove all reference to ProtonVPN by @protonprivacy@mastodon.social from Ethical Revolution. My 'Goodby Google' (https://ethicalrevolution.co.uk/de-google) and 'Opt Open Source' (https://ethicalrevolution.co.uk/opt-open-source) pages no longer promote them. I've had a terrible experience. Their attitude towards customers cannot be classed in any way ethical. They hoodwinked me in to paying a large sum of money and refuse to reimburse me even though they cannot provide their service on my Linux machine. This after I took care to read in full their refund policy page to ensure that I would be entitled to the reimbursement should the service not work, before I tried it. Their position is to not listen to me nor take any notice of my experience, and to instead tell me that it's just tough, that I must accept that they are keeping my money and that I am unable to use the service properly. My personal recommendation is to avoid #ProtonVPN.

@ms_zwiebel@tech.lgbt I haven't settled yet on what's a decent VPN alternative, although my current frontrunners are Njalla (run by a co-founder of The Pirate Bay) and Nebula by Defined.net. Not sure about their politics, but distributed and Nebula is FOSS which is a positive signal, while not a guarantee. What I've ruled out: ProtonVPN - Actively working with government against activists Windscribe - Transphobic indications Mullvad - Funding a fascist leaning party I'd love to hear anything people have learned about the alternatives, either pro or against. Hi @tailscale@hachyderm.io First of all thank you for the amazing tech you guys are building. I have a small request to make. Currently tailscale only supports #mulvadvpn and it has come to light that Mulvad's founder is the major contributor for the far right Sweden party. Under these circumstances people are exiting Mulvad. But Tailscale only supports Mulvad. Please give at least one more choice to the users. I personally would ask for #protonvpn as they have generous free tier and are a prominent player.

Mullvad VPN's CEO has been caught supporting Sweden's far-right political party. In fact, the CEO is the party's largest individual financial donor. I would suggest IVPN ( @ivpn@mastodon.social ) as an alternative. iVPN stays out of politics, except when advocating for privacy and opposing surveillance. That said... When I previously pointed out that Proton VPN's CEO was a strong supporter of Donald Trump, or that Proton falls under U.S. jurisdiction, a group of people tried to perform mental gymnastics to defend Proton. They claimed that any alternative was no better or insisted that alternatives failed to meet whatever qualifying buzzwords they chose. Today, I see those same types of people doing the same thing — defending Mullvad VPN while attempting to dismiss and degrade any suggested alternative. The Fediverse has a group of politically right-leaning individuals who have learned not to express their support for fascism as directly, but instead to do so more passively in the hope of influencing others. Standing up for companies led and owned by fascists while claiming "that's different" when comparing a company with the people leading it (Brave Browser, for example) is one way they encourage others to ignore what happens behind the scenes. Talking down alternatives that are not associated with fascism, or claiming they are no better for vague "reasons" (insert random excuse here), is another way these individuals encourage people to turn a blind eye. No matter what alternative I or anyone else suggests, the important thing is that you choose one that does not support fascism. There's an unfortunate intersection between people wary of their privacy because they don't want to be attacked by the government, and people wary of their privacy because they want to attack the government. The recent revelations about the heads of #Mullvad and #ProtonVPN have made it evident.
