Claiming "radical tolerance" while refusing to condemn a donation to a party advocating mass deportation is a political choice. Privacy tools can't be separated from the values of the people building them. Privacy is political. https://mullvad.net/en/blog/donation-controversy #Mullvad #MullvadVPN #Privacy

Regarding the follow up question of "what should I use if no commercial VPN solves my issue"... ...that entirely depends on what you need a VPN for. For many folks, modern HTTPS (TLS) covers what many VPNs sought to address - namely, limiting who can see your secure traffic. For folks using public or non-personal wifi, the local router implementing wireless isolation prevents folks on your subnet from sniffing your traffic (https/tls helps here too). For folks wanting to hide their browsing habits - shifting the inspection of traffic from their ISP to some for-purpose honeypot may not be the best solution. Also, you'll always get the "spin up your own VPN" answer in these sort of threads, but as has already been pointed out this isnt something most folks can do (it is straightforward to do!!!! Iffff... you have the knowledge and experience.... which most folks don't have. They are focusing on other things in life, etc). Two big things to consider here: 1) What are you actually trying to accomplish with a VPN? Specifics. Not just "increased privacy" or "increased security". What. Exactly. Are you trying to accomplish. And then sort out if a VPN actually does that thing for you. (Many are just snake oil promising to meet your valid desire for general health but dont actually do the thing they promise). 2) There might not be a viable solution to your need. Sometimes the answer is "this proposed solution is a scam, and there is no alternative - no actual solution. You have a real need and there is no real thing to meet that need. Sorry." #vpn #mullvad #mullvadVPN

All "privacy oriented" commercial VPNs are honeypots. You can't change my mind on that. Mullvad VPN has heavy marketing in Washington DC (their ads are plastered all across the metro stops frequented by government workers and foreign diplomats) for example. The whole "you need to hide something? here we'll hide it for you! Everyone that wants to hide something should put is all in this one consolidated place!" But they totally won't look at it. They swear. No logs, bro. I promise. I can look, but I won't. I could log, but I won't. So while Mullvad the company is showing their ass, asking what other VPN to hop to begs the question: Why are you using a commercial VPN? If it's to change your IP address to bypass porn restrictions in fundamentalist theocratic states, then cool. That's a solid use case. If it's for a nebulous reason like "for privacy" or "for security". Then you might want to see if that tool actually meets your specific threat modeling. #VPN #mullvad #mullvadVPN

Mullvad's co-founder responds to controversy, offers refunds; other developers speak out against the support of the far-right party in Sweden

In response to an issue opened on GitHub discussing the recent founder’s involvement in endorsing a far-right party in Sweden, a developer wrote this as the company’s statement: Hi, Mullvad was founded with a strict and focused mission: making mass surveillance and online censorship ineffective. That is what we as an organisation have always focused on, and will continue to do. As an employer we have always made a point of welcoming new colleagues from across the political spectrum. Some of us eat meat. Some of us believe that is murder. Some of us dream of open borders (, and Daniel happens to be one of them.) Some don’t. Daniel and I founded Mullvad because we have very similar opinions on privacy, mass surveillance and censorship. There are issues where we fundamentally disagree, as I’m sure do our colleagues - with us and with each other. Speaking as a private individual I don’t know much about Örebropartiet, and therefore don’t have a firm or complete opinion yet. What I do have a firm opinion on is the value of deferring judgement when priors suggest one doesn’t have a complete picture, as well as tolerating differences of opinion as much as humanly possible. I am dismayed with the increasingly anti-intellectual political climate in the world. On a more positive note, I am very thankful that my colleagues and I are able to live these values in our daily work, protecting the right for people to express things we don’t agree with. Being in a tolerant and intellectually open environment is also liberating and promotes truth seeking. The more people do this, the better a place the world will be. Finally, it should be obvious that Daniel’s private donation to a political party is not part of Mullvad’s values or mission, in the same way that someone’s opinions on animal rights, taxes or public healthcare policy isn’t. Cheers, Fredrik Stromberg They also added: Personally, I don’t support Daniel’s decision to endorse the party either. Mullvad also made a comment on X: Mullvad is a political company. We fight for freedom of speech, freedom of information and the right to privacy. These are firmly held values of the founders of Mullvad. Mullvad protects the right for people to express things we don’t agree with. We protect the right of everyone to access views we don’t agree with. We also live these values by being tolerant in our daily work. Everyone is welcome to collaborate with Mullvad if they share these narrow core values. As employees, contractors, customers, suppliers, lobbyists, campaign partners or whatever it might be. No matter what their other opinions are and no matter whether the founders or anyone else in Mullvad dislike them. The founders themselves fundamentally disagree on several important issues. This is what allows us to advance our common causes. Being in a tolerant and intellectually open environment is also liberating and promotes truth seeking. The more people do this, the better a place the world will be. It should be obvious that Daniel’s private donation to a political party is not part of Mullvad’s values or mission, in the same way that someone’s opinions on animal rights, taxes or public healthcare policy isn’t. That said, if you no longer want to be a Mullvad customer for philosophical reasons, we think it’s important to honor that, and will gladly refund you.

Mullvad VPN's CEO has been caught supporting Sweden's far-right political party. In fact, the CEO is the party's largest individual financial donor. I would suggest IVPN ( @ivpn@mastodon.social ) as an alternative. iVPN stays out of politics, except when advocating for privacy and opposing surveillance. That said... When I previously pointed out that Proton VPN's CEO was a strong supporter of Donald Trump, or that Proton falls under U.S. jurisdiction, a group of people tried to perform mental gymnastics to defend Proton. They claimed that any alternative was no better or insisted that alternatives failed to meet whatever qualifying buzzwords they chose. Today, I see those same types of people doing the same thing — defending Mullvad VPN while attempting to dismiss and degrade any suggested alternative. The Fediverse has a group of politically right-leaning individuals who have learned not to express their support for fascism as directly, but instead to do so more passively in the hope of influencing others. Standing up for companies led and owned by fascists while claiming "that's different" when comparing a company with the people leading it (Brave Browser, for example) is one way they encourage others to ignore what happens behind the scenes. Talking down alternatives that are not associated with fascism, or claiming they are no better for vague "reasons" (insert random excuse here), is another way these individuals encourage people to turn a blind eye. No matter what alternative I or anyone else suggests, the important thing is that you choose one that does not support fascism. Don't turn a blind eye, and don't let someone else's mental gymnastics make you question whether you should switch providers. #Mullvad #MullvadVPN #VPN #iVPN #Sweden #Fascism #Proton #ProtonVPN #Fediverse #BraveBrowser #Brave

The current drama with #MullvadVPN has again made me reflect on the technology stack I use.  I took to the keyboard: Tech Morality is Hard I try to do my best with my technology stack, by ensuring it meets my own morals and standards for life. But it is not easy! https://forkingmad.blog/tech-morality-is-hard/ #blogpost

I see everyone looking for VPN services to move to, after yet another for-profit leadership turns out to be fascist*. Meanwhile, actors in the cyberdomain, as well as AI grifters, have figured out how to do this: operational relay box networks or ORBs. Basically, VPN-by-botnet. This gave me an idea. Instead of spending money on another VPN company, I’d rather spend money on voluntarily adding nodes to a have a federated anonymising VPN. Yes, obviously I mean spending my money to set up TOR nodes. Duh! So, does anyone know of a non-profit I could donate money to, to have them spin up and maintain Tor nodes? *) capitalism is a gateway drug to fascism, and techbros are especially vulnerable. #MULLvad #MullvadVPN #Proton #Tor #Onion

@mullvadnet@mastodon.online That's a nice idea but those political parties turn those WORDS into ACTIONS with the money I sent your company. I know how this turns out... I live in the US. #mullvad #MullvadVPN #vpn

Politics, Uhm... VPNPol? Mullvad Hover or focus to reveal Sensitive
Okie but no. U are trying to "but this is private" these donations, but the facts are that Mullvad funds ur CEO / co-owner, who funds terrible ppl. How abt an analogy? I know terrible ppl have prob got a drink at the bar I like. But like... I don't expect the bar to BG check everyone who buys a drink. That's invasive and dumb and gross. But. If the co-owner of the bar is a known bigot, fk NO am I gonna go there any more. That's not "some bad ppl might go," that's "the place directly funds bigots." And the other owners are just as ick for partnering with that person. I don't expect u to police ur users' activity. Gross. No. But it's a easy fking ask to not let a bigot run things. #VPN #Mullvad #MullvadVPN @mullvadnet@mastodon.online https://mastodon.online/@mullvadnet/116822244689326681
