African Greys: How politics killed the parrot Palm Oil Detectives

The African Grey Parrot of the Congo is an understated beauty sporting ash-grey plumage, which partially conceals the red flash of their short tails - not to be confused with the smaller and darker Timneh grey parrot. This species is found, as their name suggests, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), along with Kenya, Tanzania and parts of Angola. Already globally threatened, any self-described bird lover must understand jus how the political environment in the DRC is threatening this

The Timneh Parrot, a smaller and darker cousin of the African Grey Parrot, captivates with their intelligence, vibrant personalities, and ability to mimic speech. However, their beauty and charm have contributed to their decline. The illegal pet trade is depleting wild populations, with poachers raiding nests to meet global demand. Meanwhile, habitat destruction driven by out-of-control palm oil plantations, meat agriculture, and crops like cocoa, coffee, and tobacco is eroding their forest home

🦜 NEW: Behavioral biologist Jorg Massen gave 17 Galah #Cockatoos a daily choice to fly free. The #birds almost always flew, then foraged and raised their crests more. They also showed greater #optimism about finding #walnuts after #flying. Massen sees #flight as an ethological need, tying the #research to #animal welfare that enables their natural behaviors. 👉 https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/do-birds-enjoy-flying-scientists-asked-cockatoos/ #parrots #animals #behavior #animalwelfare #ornithology #nature #science #emotions #biodiversity #zoology #biology #galah

These two young Galahs were quiet when photographed, resting between feeding visits from their parents, but were usually atrociously noisy. Seen near Bowen, Qld. #birds #nature #photography #australia #wildlife #parrots

Rainbow lorikeets are native to Australia and are highly social parrots, often travelling in noisy flocks. Up close, their lovely intricate feather texture is just as impressive as their vivid colours, as you can see from this one I snapped in 2017. They are always a delight to see in the wild, but they are also common in many urban areas too. #TextureTuesday #wildlife #WildlifePhotography #nature #NaturePhtography #birds #BirdPhotography #RainbowLorikeet #NaturFotografie #fotografie #fediverse #AustralianBirds #parrots

Sherbert and I were in deep conversation earlier when all of a sudden, she squawked her 'word' for 'come and get me'. I held my finger out and she actually stepped up! She preened the top of my head while I cleaned her cage and she talked the whole time 😊 I'm so happy she was in a great mood! Love my girl! 🦜 😍 🥰 💜 💛 💚 #parrots #pet #SunConure #bird
